Reunion Programmes held at JU

Mashrequl Islam Rahat

The second reunion programme 2010 of Chemistry and Mathematics departments of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was held on the respective department premises on March 05, 2010 amid festivity. Marking the functions both departments brought out a colourful procession in the early morning which paraded the main streets on the campus.

A lot of alumnees, teachers and staff members of both the departments attended the daylong programmes. The programmes featured procession, discussion, various types of competitions and a cultural function. JU Vice Chancellor inaugurated the functions as chief guest while JU Pro-VCs Dr. Moniruzzaman(education) and Prof. Forhad Hossain and other teachers of the university attended the events.

Debate workshop held at Premier University

A Debate workshop was organized by the Debate Club of Law Department on 24th February 2010 at Premier University, Chittagong. One hundred thirty students of Law Department participated in the workshop. “Let The Logic Be The Way of Freedom” was the slogan of that debate workshop. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the chief guests and the Chairman in-charge of Department of Law and Assistant professor Mrs.Tanzina Alam Chowdhury. She said that students should participate in debate and therefore think logically. The workshop was also attended by special guests, Ahamed Rajib Chowdhury, Lecturer Dept. of Law, Sanjoy Biswas Lecturer Dept. of Law and Md. Moinuddin Assistant professor Dept. of Law.

Secretary, Debate Club of Law Department Urmi Acharjee, chaired the session. Advocate Mili Chowdhury and Adnan Mannan, joint secretary Drishty ctg. and lecturer University of Science and Technology were the trainers of the workshop. Mili Chowdhury took a class on pronunciation and presentation and Adnan Mannan took a class on different model and rules of debate.

A model debate was also held in the debate workshop participated by debaters from IIUC, Chittagong University and Premier University. The workshop was concluded with the distribution of certificates among the participants. Urmi Acharjee was the coordinator of the workshop and Asma-AL-Amin and Arman Habib were co-coordinators.

Seminar on Higher Education at British Council

On Wednesday, 10 March 2010, a special seminar on International Foundation Year was held at the British Council Auditorium. The seminar was jointly organized by Daffodil Institute of IT (DIIT) and NCC Education UK, one of the oldest and internationally renowned British qualifications awarding board. The seminar started with the welcome speech by Mr. Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the Executive Director of DIIT. Ms. Suzanne Bartlett, the Program Manager of NCC Education UK was the keynote speaker of the seminar. The other speakers of the seminar were Peter Ashton, Director of Exams at British Council, Yan Philips, Head of Course at British Council & NCC Education and Dr. Yusuf M Islam-the Moderator of NCC Education, UK. The speakers briefly described the importance of learning English and studying of International Foundation Year for the Higher Education. They also discussed the opportunities of Higher Education in different universities and colleges at home and abroad.

 

The world through Women's Voice

The Department of English and the Department of Modern Language of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a daylong programme to celebrate the International Women's Day on 8 March 2010 at Baridhara campus.

The programme titled 'The world through Women's Voice' was attended by Dr. Razia Sultana Khan Head of Department of English and the Department of Modern Language, Prof. Nazrul Islam, Director, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. Tanvir A. Khan, Registrar, Dr. Akimun Rahman, Associate Professor, and Lauren Lovelace, Director of the American Center. Prof. Razia welcomed the guests and talked about the background of this day and read an essay by Audre Lorde. Followed by that, Prof. Nazrul Islam recited two poems after which, came a series of recitation. After that, there were series readings from a selection of literature by faculties, employees, guests and students of IUB. Lovelace read three poems, which she dedicated to three women in her life.


NSU Seminar on Meet The Leader

Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni attended as chief guest a NSU seminar on “Meet The Leaders” held on 15 March 2010, organized by AIESEC in NSU. NSU Foundation Chairman Mr. M.A. Kashem addressed the seminar as special guest. NSUF Vice Chairman Mr. Benajir Ahmed and Managing Director of Citibank NA Mr. Mamun Rashid also spoke among others. Vice Chancellor of NSU Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi chaired the event.

 

A Day to Meet, Share, and Learn

The United International University Entrepreneurship Forum (UIUEF), the business club of United International University (UIU) organized an event called “Buzz up Day” on March 4, 2010 in the UIU auditorium. The primary objective of organizing this event was to sharpen the business skills of UIU students and to familiarize them with how business actually works in real world. The event was attended by top corporate entrepreneurs and executives, the Dean of School of Business of UIU and other faculty members. Prof. Dr. Habibur Rahman, the Dean of School of Business, UIU inaugurated the event with the chief guests Mr. Shariful Islam Founder of Bangladesh Brand Forum and CEO of Brandzeal, Mr. Kazi Shahid Ahmed, Chairman of Gemcon Group and Mr. Sheikh Saif Al-Rashid ,CEO of Care Bangladesh. The chief guests shared their experience with the audiences present. He said that to get a job a candidate should have good communication skills and should be a good speaker and he should acquire knowledge about that particular company beforehand. Mr. Sheikh Saif Al-Rashid, CEO of Care Bangladesh said that to start a business capital really does not matter; it's the skills that matter.

Mr. Shariful Islam, founder of Bangladesh Brand Forum and CEO of Brandzeal gave an encouraging speech on Brand Forum as well as the current business world. He concluded by saying: “Stay hungry, stay foolish”. He believes that in that way one can discover more and by doing so can learn more. After the speeches the program was followed by a fun quiz and snacks, and later the orientation program for the new members of the UIUEF club was held.

 

BAU observed International Women's Day

Speakers at a discussion meeting on March 8 marking the 'International Women's Day' put special emphasis on ensuring equal opportunities and rights for both men and women. They gave example of many women serving in decision-making positions in Bangladesh. The event was organized by the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology (FAERS) of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) at its auditorium where Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar Mandal was the chief guest while Dean, FAERS Professor Tofazzal Hossain Miah presided over the discussion meeting.

Highlighting the economic and social achievements as well as for an end to job discrimination of women, Professor Dr. S.M. Bulbul, BAU Syndicate Member and former Dean of the faculty of Animal Husbandry, Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Professor Atiar Rahman Mollah, Professor Dr. M. Harun-Ar-Rashid, Dr. Mahfuza Begum and Ms. Florina from Viena University spoke on the occasion.

Professor Dr. Abdul Momen Miah, Director, BAU Extension Center elaborated the progress made by the University for changing the condition of rural women who were engaged in various life empowerment skills, thereby improving their livelihood and that of their families. Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar Mandal led a rally that went around the campus. The rally was largely participated by the teachers, students and researchers of the university to mark the day in a befitting manner.

Besides, a documentary film show and a cultural show was organized on the occasion. BAU Lecturer Lavlu Mazumder conducted the function.

Cleaning programme at MBSTU

9 Feb 2010 was an interesting day for the students and teachers of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University. Everyone related with MBSTU arranged a programme for cleaning the campus and its surroundings as well. Vice Chancellor of the university, professors, lecturers, students and staff members took part in cleaning the campus with their cleaning kits. By noon a neat, clean and also a beautiful campus emerged, which was only possible because of the hard work. Anisur Rahman from Prothom Alo Bondhusobha was also present to spend the day with us.

 

Remembering the Liberation War with JAGORONER GAAN

'Jagoroner Gaan' is one of the most beautiful, heart touching ways to remember our Liberation War. We know how the songs of the war played a vital role in encouraging the freedom fighters to fight for the liberation of our beloved motherland. On 9 February 2010, a function was organized on the MBSTU campus when 28 singers were invited to sing the songs they had sung 38 years ago to inspire the nation. VC M Nurul Islam and Proctor Omar Faruk were present on the occasion. The whole function was highly enjoyable and the campus was packed with lots of students. The function helped them to realize the pain and loss of lives during the Liberation War. 'Jagoroner Gaan' became successful because it got huge compliments from the students of MBSTU and also from the students of other campuses as well.

Freshers’ reception at IIUC

The Business Club of IIUC organized a reception programme for the freshly admitted students of the Department of Business Administration, IIUC on 6 March 2010. Mahbubur Rahman, Associate Professor and head of the department was the chief guest of the programme. Masrurul Mowla, Assistant Professor and Advisor of the business club was the special guest of the programme. The programme was presided over by Nazamul Hoque, Convener of the Business Club. The programme started with the recitation of holy Quran. It was followed by a power point presentation on the recent activities of the Business Club by Hamed Hasan Riyadh, President of the Business Club. There were speeches from the chief guest, by the special guest and the convener. The students from different semesters rocked the stage with songs, jokes etc.

90th. Birth Anniversary of Bangabandhu held at ULAB

The 90th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sk. Mujibur Rahman was observed at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). To mark this auspicious occasion a seminar was organised at the ULAB auditorium on March 16. Professor Abdul Mannan of the School of Business gave the keynote address titled 'Role of Bangabandhu in the creation of Bangladesh.' He spoke on Bangabandhu's life in Tungipara, his first encounter with politics in Kolkata, his long political career in Pakistan and his struggle and sacrifice for the creation of Bangladesh. Presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of the university Professor Rafiqul Islam the seminar was also addressed by Professor Mohit ul Alam of the Department of English and Humanities. A large number of students and faculty members of the university attended the seminar.
