Debate workshop at Eastern University

Eastern University Debating Club (EUDC) organised a two-day workshop on parliamentary debate on March 6 and 7 at its auditorium. Renowned debaters, resource persons, faculty members of the university as well as 160 students participated in the workshop.

Professor Dr. Abdur Rab, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university inaugurated the event and in his welcome speech, he wished the workshop a success and hoped that the training would provide the participants with necessary knowledge about parliamentary debate. In the first session, Abdullah Md. Shukrana, Vice President of Bangladesh Debate Federation (BDF) and Mahfuz Mishu, General Secretary of the same organisation discussed the methods, manners and techniques used in parliamentary debate.

Dr. Abdun Nur Tushar, a renowned debater and also the President of Bangladesh Debate Federation (BDF) graced the event as Guest of Honour. They handed over crests to the participants of the mock debate.

Seminar on Biotechnology

A seminar on 'Global Status of Commercialized Biotechnology: GM Crops-2009' was held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on March 14, 2010. A day long seminar was organised by the Faculty of Biological Science of the university.
Dean of the Faculty Dr. Abdul Jobber Hawlader presided over the seminar while Agricultural Scientist of Philippines Dr. Rendy A- Howti presented a key note.

In his key note he narrated the significance of using Biotechnology in agricultural sectors. He also mentioned that this technology would not pollute the healthy environment and any agriculture based country can hold agriculture revaluation to use the technology. Earlier the Vice Chancellor of the University Dr. Sharif Enamul Kabir inaugurated the seminar as a Chief Guest. “To save the environment from pollution and to increase the production of crops in modern era utilizing the technology would help to advance in the agriculture revaluation,” VC mentioned at the seminar.

English Department, East West University holds seminar on Lawrence

The Seminar Series, Department of English, East West University organized a seminar in its auditorium on 16 March 2010 at 5 P.M. The Seminar was titled ‘Varieties of Otherness in Birds, Beasts and Flowers by D.H. Lawrence’ which was presented by Masrufa Ayesha Nusrat, Assistant Professor of the Department of English. At the beginning of the seminar, Zahid Akter, Convener of the Seminar Series and Assistant Professor of the Department introduced the paper presenter to the audience. Masrufa Ayesha Nusrat then presented her paper which lasted for about forty minutes. In her paper, she focused on “Lawrence’s attempt of a spiritual journey to the varieties of otherness”. She also stated that in Birds, Beasts and Flowers Lawrence “tries to comprehend all animate and inanimate objects in nature through his intuition and intellect and [attempts to] overcome obstacles to be one with all the objects of nature. Through this journey he gains self-knowledge of the shortcomings of the human race and discovers that there are other worlds and otherness of beings beyond and beneath human apprehension.” The presentation was followed by a vibrant session of question and answers.

Inauguration of “HEALTHY CAMPUS'' at Dhaka university

"HEALTHY CAMPUS'' a project run by the Department of Geography and Environment, university of Dhaka celebrated the Inauguration ceremony on 16th February. At the beginning Dr. Towhida Rashid (who was the initiator of the project) explained the aims and objectives of the project. He said that 3R - reduce, reuse, recycle - are the core concept lying behind the project. She said that primary components of the project are waste management and indoor plantation. Indoor plants can keep the indoor air fresh. NASA ran an experiment on 19 indoor plants where 16 of them show higher level of pollution absorbing capacity. As a part of this project rubber plants and palm tree were placed in the class rooms of the dept, which will be taken cared by students. Along with plants, two trash boxes - one for paper, another for plastic were placed in each classroom. Trash boxes of six different colors - red, blue, brown, light green, pink, orange were placed centrally for separate waste collection papers, glass, metal, organic elements, plastic bottle, plastic pack.

Then the honorable Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, also the chairperson of the department of Geography & Environment Prof. Shahnaz Huq-Hussain inaugurated the project formally through putting different types of waste in different trash boxes. She advised the students to use papers judicially. After that Prof. Nasreen Ahmad delivered her speech in which she stressed on placing trash box on the field in front of the science annex building. She mentioned that most of the time students want to put disposable items in a trash box but due to unavailability they can't do it. Therefore, if a trash box was placed in the corners of the annex ground, it will definitely encourage students of other dept. To use them.

Seminar on 'Anti Smoking and Drug Abuse' held at BRAC University

BRAC University organised a seminar on 'Anti smoking and anti Drug' in collaboration with MONON, MANAS and BUEC at the indoor games room of the university. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Captain (retd) Dr Mujibor Rahman Fakir was present as the chief guest in the seminar. Professor Dr. Arup Ratan Chowdhury, founder director of MANASH presented a keynote speech in the seminar with acting Vice Chancellor of BRAC University Professor Golam Samdani Fakir in the chair.

Dr Mujibor Rahman Fakir said that our anti smoking and anti drug campaigns should start from each family. He expressed his fear that now a days many bright people like doctors use drugs so we all need to be concerned about this issue. It cannot be stopped by law only; we have to be socially aware and make a social movement all together. He put forward a message that said, "No more nicotine, take raw tea". He also added that the present government should give emphasis on stopping drug abuse.

Professor Dr. Arup Ratan Chowdhury talked about the physiological effect of smoking on our body. He also added that drug addiction starts from smoking and explained how smoking as well as drug have harmful impact on our body mechanism and we become dependent on it. He provided some statistics on how many people suffer or die every year due to smoking related complications or diseases. He made us aware that not only smokers but non-smokers also get affected equally. Now a days not only men but women also smoke and take various types of drugs. He pointed out some reasons for smoking, such as curiosity, peer pressure, uncomfortable feelings and watching favourite celebrities smoking in movies. He said that for all kinds of addiction three major components are responsible; psychological, physiological and social. He insisted all to “SAY NO TO DRUGS”.

Seminar on Professional & Personal Effectiveness

Art exhibition at IUB on Independence Day

The Art Club of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a three week long art exhibition titled 'Colour & Form: A Trilogy of 39th Independence Day 2010', on Baridhara campus.

The students of Arts and Aesthetics did 70 paintings for the exhibition. They used various colors to symbolize blood, sorrow and peace.

Launching the exhibition Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, the Vice Chancellor and the Chief Guest of the occasion appreciated the organizer and the students involved. He said: 'These artists are our future.' The Arts and Aesthetics course instructor Asst. Prof. Nazir Ahmed also spoke on the occasion. He informed, “We are representing colour and form and each week we will change the form of painting which is why we used the word trilogy in the title”.

Director of School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. Nazrul Islam, Registrar Dr. Tanvir A Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Modern Language, Dr. Akimun Rahman and other faculty members and officers of IUB were present.

IIUC Study Tour

International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC), Department of Pharmacy organised study tour-2010 on March 18, 2010 at Coxs Bazar. Nearly 200 students attended the tour. Akter Syeed, Chairmen of the Department of Pharmacy, Prof Dr. Mir Ezharul Hossain and some senior teachers, office staffs were also present in the study tour. Biopharma Laboratories Limited sponsored T-shirts for all students and teachers. Students spent the whole day on the beach and enjoyed the natural beauty of Coxs Bazar. The most interesting part of the tour was the raffle draw, where a total of twenty prizes were given. The return journey started just after sunset, students were dropped off at the IIUC city campus at 11PM.
