Seminar on Climate change

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries of the world which is going to suffer most from climate change. Climate change will increase the frequency of tropical cyclone, flood and other disasters in Bangladesh. Due to sea level rise saline intrusion will be a common phenomena in the coastal region. To drive the attention of the young generation towards these issues "Agro EDGE" & "AUTUMN Foundation" have jointly organized a seminar on “Climate change & Bangladesh Contemporary perspective and way forward” at the central auditorium of Jahangirnagar University on 10th April 2010.Student from different private & public university were gathered to enrich their knowledge at the seminar. The Managing director of "Agro EDGE" Mr. Murtaza Lodi said that "We know that the young generation is the key change maker of the country. They will work on the policy level as well as will rule the country in the future. From this point of view we think they should have a clear conception about this issue, so we along with AUTUMN Foundation have arranged this seminar". Dr. Ahsan Uddin Ahmed, Convener, Campaign for Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) in his key speech said that, due to climate change induced problem like drought, flood the agricultural sector of the country will suffer the most, which will hamper the food security of our country. He emphasized on adaptation practices like deep irrigation equipment installation, innovation of new crop which can survive the extreme condition like salinity & stagnant water, development of social safety net etc. Another speaker of the seminar Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Chairperson Unnayan Onneshan, accentuated the fact that we have to work on the policy level. The developed country who are responsible for carbon emission should pay the compensation price to combat the adverse effect of climate change in Bangladesh & It is our right. Dr. Syed Hafizur Rahman , Associate Professor & Chairman, Department of Environmental Sciences, Jahangirnagar University, Mujibul Anam, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Jahangirnagar University & Jussi Dayna Biswas, Lecturer, Department of Environmental Science, Stamford University Bangladesh also presented their valuable speech at the seminar. Speakers at the seminar discussed on the causes, effects & probable adaptation measures of climate change in the context of Bangladesh. The seminar also highlighted that, we have to remember, in the name of adaptation we should not allow such practices that will destroy the natural eco-system, which will lead to the sufferings of the marginalized people. The whole session was moderated by Dr. Siddiqur Rahman Appollo, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Jahangirnagar University.
