Road to Enlightenment

THE Media and Communication Department of the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a seminar titled Road to Enlightenment on the 29 April 2010, at the Baridhara campus. The seminar was arranged under the Development Communication stream course where the students went on a field trip to study on life of tea planters of kakiachora and Khasia Community School.

At the seminar a documentary was screened and later a discussion pole was opened where Mr. Phillip Gain shared his expertise on the people of that area and said, “We need to reflect on a number of critical aspects on how we can participate in campaigning to initiate so that these people have a decent working condition and the right amount of pay so that they may initiate their own development”.

Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor, IUB attended as chief guest, Dr. Tanvir A Khan, Registrar, IUB, Prof. Nazrul Islam, Director School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. GM Shahidul Alam, Head, Media and Communication department, Mr. Phillip Gain, adjunct faculty, Ms. Jessica Tartila Suma, Junior Lecturer, Media and Communication, students and other employees of IUB were present.

Prof. Nazrul thanked the students and Jessica Tartila for arranging the seminar and appreciated their presentation. Before the seminar ended Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury said a few words starting with a local Sylheti poetry and talked about the background of the people of the tea garden.

 

 

Fresher's Reception and Speech Competition @ Marketing Department, CU

Department of Marketing Studies and International Marketing, University of Chittagong arranged fresher reception programme for 18th batch. In the programme Prof. Dr. Md. Alauddin, Pro VC was present as chief guest while Prof. Harunur Rashid, the Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration was present as special guest. Prof. Salamat Ullah Bhuiyan, Chairman of the Department of Marketing, Prof. Syed Ahsanul Alam Parvez, upcoming chairman of the department, Prof. Selina Akhter, Chairman of the Department of Management, Prof. Dr. Sultan Ahmed, Chairman of the Department of Accounting & Information Systems and Prof. Begum Ismat Ara Huq, Chairman of the Department of Finance and Banking were present as distinguished guests. After the discussion session, students of the department presented a cultural programme which was appreciated by all. Before the programme a speech competition was arranged by Society for Leadership Proliferation (SLP), the student organisation of the department exclusively for the fresher. The competition was followed by a workshop on 'How to deliver an effective speech' conducted by Mr. Adnan Mannan, Joint Secretary, Drishty Chittagong. Twenty five enthusiastic students took part in the competition and seven of them were selected for the final round.

Free laptop for every student

EDUCATION is increasingly becoming dependent on information technology. No student or even educational institution can do without this electronic gadget these days. Computer, internet and other elements of IT have become essential part of modern education. To help enhance the capacity and skill of students, Daffodil International University has taken up the project called “One student - one laptop”. Under this project, all students will get a laptop each and use it for their study purpose. It is a unique step towards establishing a Digital University in line with the government's policy of Digital Bangladesh. With a laptop in hand, students will be able to prepare their assignments sitting anywhere -- in the lounge of the university, at cafeteria or at home.

“One student - one laptop” project starts from Summer Semester 2010. Students do not need to pay any additional tuition fees for laptop. With the implementation of the project, DIU is going to set up a unique example of transferring technology to education. It is hoped that receiving the benefits of technology, the graduates of the university would be well equipped for competing in a globalised world in a better way.

NATURE Club members of British Standard School held a discussion meeting in the school on May 3 highlighting the importance of clean environment, the effect of air and noise pollution, and human endeavour towards creating a green world. Vice Principal Badrum Nawazish presided over the meeting while students actively participated. They cleaned the school building and campus to create awareness among students and took out a colourful rally on different roads in Dhanmondi distributing leaflets in the houses and among the people. The leaflet contained ten basic points on maintaining clean environment and a pollution free world. Teachers guided the members of the club and their modest effort was successful in spreading the message among the students and adults who warmly applauded the effort.


Internship certificate ceremony at BAU

ON 26 April 2010, 6th internship certificate giving ceremony of B.Sc.A.H.(Hons.) graduates was held at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).

Students of B.Sc. Animal Husbandry (AH), session 2004-05 received the certificates. President of the ceremony was Prof. Dr. Md. Ali Akbar, Dean faculty of A.H, chief guest prof. Dr. M.A. Sattar Mandal, Vice-chancellor of BAU; special guest Dr. Khan Shahidul Haque, the Director General of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI). Dean of all faculties, Registrar, Proctor, all departmental head of A.H faculty, all teachers, intern students were also present in the ceremony.


Workshop on Skill Development and MUN at UIU

UNITED Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) UIU chapter organised a workshop on skill development and Model United Nations (MUN) on April 29-30 at United International University main campus in Dhanmondi. The 29th April sessions mainly focused on communication skills and on 30th April sessions, negotiation skills and Model United Nations (MUN) were discussed. The aim of the workshop was to develop communication skill of the participants and provide them with some essential lessons. The workshop was open for UIU students and the members of United Nations Youth and Students association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB). The workshop was inaugurated with the valuable speech of Mr. Subarna Barua, Faculty; United International University. The first session was taken by Jannatul Ferdous, Deputy Manager, Grameenphone Ltd. She talked about the importance of communication skill in organizations as well as in daily life. Her eye- catching presentation and remarkable speech helped the participants to enrich their knowledge on communication. President of UNYSAB, Nafiz Imtiaz took the session on Model United Nations (MUN). The event ended on 2nd May when certificates were given to each participant. President of UNYSAB, Nafiz Imtiaz, Vice president Zakir Hassan Titas, Faculty of United International University Subarno Barua and DSA Mr.Shawkat Selim were present in the ending ceremony.

 

Seminar on Disaster risk reduction held at PSTU

A seminar titled 'Disaster Risk Reduction: Risk Based Approaching and Current Practice in Bangladesh' was held at Patuakhali Science and Technology University on April-13. The department of Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) of PSTU organised the seminar where PSTU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Sakhawat Husain attended as the chief guest.

Prof. AKM Mostafa Zaman, chairman of the department of Environment Science and Disaster Management of PSTU presided over the seminar while Prof. Ali Asgor Bhuiyan, convener for Dean council, Prof. Dr. Harun-Or-Rashid, dean of post graduate and research department, Prof. Dr. Rabiul Haque, dean of faculty of Agriculture PSTU, Rafiq Uddin, professor and chairman of Biology department of USA University were also present.

 

3-day inter-department debate competition concludes at JU

A 3-day “inter-department debate competition, 2010” concluded at the central auditorium of Jahangirnagar University (JU) last week. Jahangirnagar Univeristy Debate Organization (JUDO) organised the competition beginning from April 29 to May 1. Pro Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Dr Farhad Hossain attended and distributed prizes among the winners in the evening at the central auditorium of the university as chief guest. Participating 24 departments of the university and the department of Bangla and Anthropology faced the final round. Bangla department won the tree-day competition by 3-2 ballot.
