Commencement of the way to peace
Adiba Fannana
Police is the peace protector of a country. Currently our police force is taking effective training including several needed courses as well. These trainings take place in training institutions like Mohera Police Training Institute. We were allowed to visit and observe the overall training process through a field trip arranged by CPS.
In Mohera, the police personnel welcomed us and answered our queries regarding the police training. More was known to us through a presentation presented by the DIG Mr. Jashim Uddin.
Bangladesh Police Department at present has 1,24,012 policemen working for our protection and the public police ratio is 1:1225. Bangladesh police is working with an objective to provide quality service to all citizens and make Bangladesh a better and safer place to live and work.
Bangladesh police has some objectives including raise of morale, spirit of cooperation, habit of physical health, sharpen ability of judgment and so on.
In this institution trainees are being provided with two types of courses such as Field Course and, Academic Course which includes swimming, shooting, drilling, horse riding, driving, computer, accounts, language and so forth.
As our police department was formed according to the British system, it has some limitations. The curriculum lacks practical knowledge, modern equipment, resources, application of traditional methods etc. To reshape the total training process, some recommendations are needed like appointment of best officers, need basis training, revising and assessment system, updated syllabus regarding hi-tech crime and so on.
From our field trip, we came to know about some effective future plans of Bangladesh police as well. These plans are: enhancing service delivery capacity, quality investigation, effective human resource management, effective police oversight and community participation in policing etc.
In the 21st Century to keep pace with the world we need to modernise our vanguard department for our own sake, to compete in establishing peace worldwide.
