Seminar On
'Applications and Prospects of Mechatronics Engineering in Bangladesh'

The World University of Bangladesh (WUB) organised an international seminar on 15 October at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB). Professor Dr. S.M. Nazrul Islam, Vice-Chancellor, BUET & President IEB to grace the occasion as chief guest. Amongst the invitees were Dr. Pran Gopal Datta, Vice-Chancellor, of the Bangladesh Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Professor Dr. M. Nurul Islam, Vice-Chancellor, Moulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology as special guests.

In his keynote speech Dr. Engineer Hubert Roth of Siegen University, Germany highlighted the effects of mechatronics engineering for the industrial and health sector of Bangladesh. Visual presentations were made on how the sensor based mechanical application in cars is used in protecting vehicles from collision.

The seminar was also addressed by Dr. Musfiq M. Choudhury, advisor of the university, Professor Dr. M. Shafiqul Islam, and Professor Dr. Fazlul Karim of the Mechatronics Engineering Department of WUB.

In addition, the students of Mechatronics Department of the university displayed their practical work on mechatronics in the gateway of the Seminar Hall, which attracted a huge number of audience.


Self-Access Centre Inaugurated

Aself-access centre was inaugurated in the department of English at East West University on 19 October. The Vice Chancellor of East West University, Professor Mohammed Sharif inaugurated the ceremony. Dr. Bijoy P. Barua, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. Fakrul Alam, Advisor of the Department of English, and Mr. Shafiqur Rahman, Chairman, Department of English were present on the occasion. Mr. Zohur Ahmed, senior Lecturer in the Department of English at East West University gave an informative presentation on the various uses of cyber space relating to academic studies. The self-access centre is all about collaborative learning in the world today. This is a style of learning that encourages and stimulates the knowledge input the students acquire in the classrooms. It also offers comprehensive online learning opportunities to the students and acquaints them with ways to make the best use of virtual space.


Youth Development Programme ( YDP) at SPEED

Our youth are the future of an enduring society, yet the leadership and guidance required to prepare them for successful and productive lives is often insufficient. The first class of Youth Development Programme (YDP) called “Super Saturday” was held at the campus of SPEED on 9 October. Super Saturday is a fun youth development programme for students of ages 9-18 years. A number of programmes have been offered through sports, IT, and the arts which will be held in Scholastica, Uttara section. The programme provides an opportunity for students to benefit from hands-on learning in a fun-filled enviroment and to spend their time constructively on Saturdays. In addition, these programmes teach children important skills, open expression, leadership, sportsmanship and creativity.


Nepal team visits BAU

A16-member team from Nepal made a two-day visit to the Fisheries Faculty of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) to obtain practical knowledge on Fish Technology, which is presently an emerging technology through out the world. The team's visit on October 2-3 included three teachers, four officials and nine female fish farmers. The team was led by Dr. Sunita Roy, a teacher of Tribhuban University of Nepal. The teachers of Fisheries Faculty, BAU spoke about the fish technology. The team members were given practical knowledge on the combined cultivation of different fishes. They also visited research fields, laboratory and hatcheries.

Dean of Fisheries Faculty Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdul Wahab was also present at the seminar.


Southern University holds intra-departmental debate competition

An intra-departmental debate competition was held at the Southern University campus, Chittagong. The title of the competition was “It is better to have brains than beauty.”

The team for the motion was declared the winner of the competition. Md. Rokon Uddin, student of Business Administratioin secured the best debater award. The event was presided over by Prof. AZM Shamsuzzaman Khan, Head of the Dept. of English, whilst Prof. Dr. Sharifuzzaman, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university graced the event as the chief guest. Sarwar Jahan, Founder of Southern University, also spoke at the event. Shafin Muhammad John, Lecturer of the Dept. of English, was in the overall supervision of the competition.
