Manzoor Hasan elected as BYLC Chair

Barrister Manzoor Hasan OBE, founding executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and advisor to BRAC University's Institute of Governance Studies (IGS), has been elected chairperson of the board of governors of Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC), Bangladesh's first leadership institute, with effect from May 1, 2011. The election took place at the second annual general meeting of the organisation on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Lake Shore Hotel in Dhaka. Originally developed at Harvard University in 2008, BYLC has been established as a premier leadership institute in Bangladesh that works to create a more inclusive, tolerant and just society by training the next generation of home-grown leaders.


Edexcel Representative Visits Daffodil International School

Saidur Rahman, Country Manager, Edexcel visited the Dhanmondi and Uttara Campuses of Daffodil International School (DIS) recently. He expressed his great satisfaction after witnessing the educational environment, quality and infrastructure facilities at the school.

Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Project Director, Momin Ullah Bhuyan, Vice Principal, teachers and students were present during his visit.


Seminar on 'Translation Studies in Bangladesh' at DIU auditorium

The English Department of Daffodil International University (DIU) arranged a seminar titled 'Translation Studies in Bangladesh' at DIU auditorium on April 30, 2011, with the aim to underscore the need to introduce a course of translation studies in different universities both in public and private sectors.

The keynote speaker was Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam, Department of English, Dhaka University. Professor Dr. Lutfor Rahman, Vice Chancellor, Daffodil International University, was the chief guest at the programme. Faculty members of different universities along with the teachers and students of DIU were present at the seminar. The programme was coordinated and conducted by Dr. Binoy Barman, Head of the Department of English, Daffodil International University.


Annual Prize Giving Ceremony of EWIS & C

East West International School and College (EWIS & C), at Mirpur, celebrated its Annual Prize Giving Ceremony and Cultural Programme 2010-2011 on April 8, 2011 at the LGED Auditorium.

Vice Chancellor of Dhaka Univeristy, Professor Dr. A.A.M.S Arefin Siddique and Shakila Zafar, renowned musical personality, were present at the programme as chief guest and special guest respectively. Md. Aulad Hossain, Chairman of the School presided over the programme. In his speech, the chief guest emphasised on the significance of education based on truth. While the special guest urged the students to be disciplined in every walk of life, the Principal requested the guardians to work hand in hand in educating their children. The chief guest handed over prizes to the students for their outstanding performance in different events and bade farewell to the O and A Level students. The programme ended with a colourful cultural show.


Trip to India for SAARC Debate

On February 24, 2011 the SAARC Debate Contest was organised at the UNDP Complex, by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation for Contemporary studies and UNDP at New Delhi, India. Five teams participated in the contest. Tausif Amin Khan and Mastura Tasnim, students of Academia represented Team Bangladesh. P.D. Kaushik, the chief organiser of Rajiv Gandhi Contemporary studies gave a warm reception to all the participating countries and presided over the programme.


Election of new Chairman at IBAT Trust

Professor Dr. A.Y.M. Abdullah has been elected as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of International Business, Agriculture and Technology Trust (IBAT), the founding body of Northern University Bangladesh at a special meeting of IBAT Trust on April 23, 2011. Dr. A.Y.M. Abdullah is a professor of Institute of Business Administration IBA, Dhaka University, a successful entrepreneur and a philanthropist.


One Day Seminar: Towards Green Architecture by Department of Architecture, BUET

A'One Day Seminar : Towards Green Architecture was held at the Council Bhaban in Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka, on April 26, 2011. It was a joint initiative by the Department of Architecture', BUET, and GIZ Progress. Honorable State Minister of Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology, Architect Yeafesh Osman was the chief guest at the seminar. Professor Dr. S. M. Nazrul Islam, Vice Chancellor, BUET, was the chair person and preceded over the seminar. As special guests were also present Professor Dr. M. Habibur Rahman, Pro Vice Chancellor, BUET, and Dr. Ute Boettcher, GIZ Programme Coordinator, PSES. The Head of the Department of Architecture, BUET, Professor Dr. Zebun Nasreen Ahmed was the Convenor of the seminar. The Co-convenor was Associate Professor Shamim Ara Hassan and as a team member of BUET Green Architecture Project, Professor Dr. Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed was there to grace the occasion, too.

Green Architecture offers an opportunity to (a) use resources efficiently while creating healthier buildings that improve human health, (b) build a better environment, and (c) provide cost saving. Seven papers were presented by different researchers at the seminar. As a continuation to this research, a two day workshop will be held on June 11 and 12, 2011, in BUET.
