Training on Koha at BRAC University

A five day training on Free and Open Source Software, Koha was organised by BRAC University Ayesha Abed Library on May 8-12, 2011. It was a customised training specially designed for the Integrated Library System (ILS) implementation team of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).

This five day training programme was conducted by Dr Mumit Khan, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department and library team of BRACU followed by practical session in which participants gained knowledge on installation, configuration and customisation of Koha.

At the closing session of the training, Professor Ainun Nishat, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University distributed certificates to participants. Dr Md Golam Samdani Fakir, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Registrar of BRAC University were also present at the programme.


Training Workshop for Physics Olympiad 2011

The first ever Physics Olympiad entitled “Oxford The Daily Star National Physics Olympiad 2011” ended successfully on April 29, 2011. The opening ceremony of the training workshop was held last Friday, on May 6. A total of 30 participants were invited to attend the training camp. According to the performance in the National Physics Olympiad only five out of the 30 trainees will again be selected to qualify for the International Physics Olympiad as per their merits and in compliance with the norms of the International Physics Olympiad. These competitors will participate in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Thailand under the personal supervision of the organisers.

The workshop was held at the “Dr. Qudrat-E- Khuda Auditorium” in OIS. The Principal of Oxford International School, G.M. Nizam Uddin, the Physics Olympiad Coach, Professor Arshad Momen, Professor Supria Saha, Jahangir Masud, National Physics Olympiad were amongst those present in the workshop. Jahangir Masud, General Secretary, National Physics Olympiad and Olympiad Coach Professor Arshad Momen will be in charge of the workshop.


Seminars and Workshops at DIU

East Side Institute, USA and Daffodil International University (DIU) jointly organised a series of training workshops and seminars from May 16-21, 2011 at DIU Auditorium.

The topics of the week long programme were effective education for 21st century, teacher's training on following ESI Philosophy and Bangladeshi needs, workshop on performance of a life time, workshop on effective work place behaviour and workshop on cross cultural adaptation.

Two Pioneer educationists, Lois Holzman and Carrie Lobman from East Side Institute, USA conducted the training workshops and seminars.

Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Chittagong organised a workshop on various methods and approaches of Biotechnology. Students of William Carey Academy took part in the workshop. A M Abu Ahmed, Chairman of the department introduced the session by mentioning various aspects of genetics and biotechnology. Professor Dr Md Al Forkan conducted a presentation on various tools and methods of biotechnology. Adnan Mannan, Lecturer, Department of Biotechnology focused on recent trends of Biotechnology and the future aspects. The students visited the molecular genetics lab, microbial biotechnology lab, tissue culture and engineering lab and USDA project lab. Kim Gregory, Science teacher of WCA presented the vote of thanks.


ACCA Bangladesh launches Foundations in Accountancy

Global accountancy body ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) launched a new suite of qualification 'Foundations in Accountancy' worldwide. To mark this, ACCA Bangladesh organised a launching ceremony on May 6, 2011 at the Grand Ball Room, Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, Dhaka. Muhammad Faruk Khan, Commerce Minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh graced the programme as the chief guest.

Nick Low, Acting British High Commissioner; Jon Gore, Acting Director, British Council were present at the programme among other distinguished guests. Anwaruddin Chowdhury FCA, former president and council member, ICAB, Saifuddin M. Naser, Managing Director, Union Capital Limited, Arif Al Islam FCCA, Managing Director CEO, Summit Communications Limited were also present. Mohua Rashid, Country Manager, ACCA Bangladesh delivered the welcome speech. A number of professionals, members of other accountancy bodies and members of ACCA attended the programme.
