Hanging Out at the DUS!

Salman Rob

When you think about University cafeterias, you think it would be a big room with lots of students and a long table filled with different types of foods and beverages. But when you think about Dhaka University (DU), well it is just too hard to think about cafeterias, because when it comes to places to eat, DU just has too many of them. One of those hangout spots is the Dhaka University Snacks, better known as the DUS. What is so special about the place is that not just students of DU have 'addas' over there, students from all over Dhaka can go and have fun with their friends. Even though the place is in the middle of the road, the hype of the students always running around, jamming with acoustic guitars and having small bites, makes the place special. The store does not have much to offer but even then, students love the short listed menu. Their 'Lassi' is one of the specialties. People who are not from DU, often visit DUS just to sit down for a while with a few friends and have the lassi -- a must! The place is also surrounded by a lot of other small cart shops where you can get 'Jhal muri,' 'candy floss,' 'tea' and lots of different types of sweets. The whole place is bordered with a small wall, which would barely fit in two people, and students usually take their food over to the wall to sit, eat and laugh about their daily lives.

Sarwar Zubair Ratul, a student of Food nutrition at DU tells us about his experiences at the DUS. "Whenever I go there I always end up having the 'Lassi', it's just so good! I have been going there for quite a while now and I still haven't gotten bored of the drink. You also get to meet a lot of people and have discussions all day long since the place stays open from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm. There is also coffee which is actually a great booster for me as it actually recharges you after a stressful day!"

Ratul also adds, "My favourite part is when the concerts and dramas take place at the DUS. It's just amazing to see so many people gathered around, enjoying the music or whatever that is going on there. At the same time, people are having food from the DUS store."

So, that's pretty much all about the DUS -- a humble store, located in a friendly environment with friends. Wow! What else do you need? So, whenever you're stressed out and need to recharge yourself, grab your friends and head out to DUS and have the 'lassi' of your life!
