Debate Spree 2011

East West University Debating Club organised a national level debate contest in which 85 teams from different institutions of the country participated.

The eight-day long contest kicked off on November 17 and ended on November 24 in the auditorium of East West University. Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, President of the Board of Trustees graced the occasion as chief guest while the programme was chaired by the VC, Professor Ahmed Shafee.


BTEC Education UK Fair 2011

Edexcel in collaboration with British Council organised BTEC Education UK Fair 2011 at the British Council, Dhaka. The fair was inaugurated by Rashed Khan Menon, MP, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee for Education as chief guest and Rober Gibson, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh on November 26, 2011.Among others, Isabel Sutcliff, Director Edexcel UK, Rosemary Arnott, Director British Council Bangladesh, Saidur Rahman Country Manager Edexcel, Shahin Reza, Regional Manager Edexcel were present at the inauguration.

BTECs are standalone qualifications and recognised by employers internationally and it also provides academic progression at every level. It also ensures advanced entry into many universities worldwide.


Day-long 'Get-together'

Dept. of Law, Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) organised a day-long 'Get-together' with teachers and students on November 24, 2011 at its Banani Campus. Professor Dr M Shamsul Haque, Vice-Chancellor of NUB was the chief guest in a discussion session of the day-long programme and Professor Dr A W M Abdul Huq, Dean, Faculty of Law chaired the programme.

Professor Dr Md Nurul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Syed Sarfaraj Hamid, Head of the Department of Law, Professor Monowar Ahmad Trafdar, Head, Department of MPH, Professor Dr Engineer Md Saifur Rahman and Major (Retd.) Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Executive Director, HR & Admin, NUB Trust were special guests at the discussion.


HR Day Observed

Department of Management Studies of Dhaka University observed the 'HR day' with great enthusiasm on October 29, 2011.

The chairman of the Department, Dr Shyam Sundar Karmakar along with Dr Serajul Islam, Professor, inaugurated the HR Day. The joy of the students knew no bounds when Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique joined the students in the rally.Later, 'Bangla cinema'- was directed by Sherpa and performed by the students.


Workshop at JKKNIU

A workshop on “Updating Academic Curriculum at Undergraduate & Master's Levels” was held at the conference room of Computer Science and Engineering Department of Jatiyo Kobi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) on November 24, 2011.

Dean of Science and Technology Faculty Professor Dr Md Abul Basar presided over the workshop.

Professor Dr M Kaikobad of Bangladesh University of Science and Technology (BUET) presented the key-note paper at the workshop.

Professor Dr MA Motalib of Islamic University of Technology, Chairman of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department of JKKNIU, AHM Kamal, lecturers of the department, Zannatul Ferdous and Tushar Kanti Saha, among others, addressed the workshop.


CampusFrance now in Bangladesh

CampusFrance, the French national agency for the promotion of French higher education abroad, has launched its maiden journey in Bangladesh for providing expert and personalised assistance for Bangladeshi students wishing to pursue higher studies in France.

The new desk was inaugurated at Alliance Française de Dhaka on December 1, in the capital city. The Embassy of France, Alliance Française de Dhaka and CampusFrance will jointly organise the inaugural ceremony on that day.

The role of CampusFrance in Bangladesh is to ensure that more Bangladeshi students make rational decisions about study opportunities in France and that they are able to obtain the most up-to-date, accurate and reliable information about French education opportunities.


Annual Independent Economic Assembly 2011

The Independent Economic Society of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a day-long programme titled Annual Independent Economic Assembly 2011 (AiEA-2011) on November 24, 2011. Five leading private universities, namely, American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB), BRAC, IUB, North South University (NSU) and UIU participated in the programme. In the inaugural ceremony, Professor A K Monaw-war Uddin Ahmed, Head, Department of Economics, IUB and Professor Nadim Jahangir, Director, School of Business, IUB welcomed the participants.

A good number of students from the participanting universities, members of the faculty and management attended the programmes.


BRACU Film Festival

The 4th Annual BRACU Film Festival took a more unconventional path. It focused on movies created in South Asia that have a cultural emphasis. The motto of the festival was 'Blood, Sweat and Tears Meet the Silver Screen'. Present at the event were Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammad Golam Samdani Fakir, Registrar, Ishfaque Ilahi Chowdhury and faculty members. Besides, students were also present at the festival. The programme was held from November 21-23, 2011.


Corrigendum

In last issue's article, Discourse on Language and Legislation at NSU, the photo captions to the pictures were inadvertently written as, caption one: Head of IML at the programme and caption two: The guest speaker at the lecture. This should have been written as, caption one: Justice Dr Ziaul Karim as the guest speaker at the programme and caption two: Prof Shahedul Huq, Head of IML at the lecture.
