NCC Education Successful Visit to BIT

NCC Education's new managing director, John Fairhurst, recently visited the Bhuiyan Institute of Technology (BIT), Bangladesh. On January 16, John, along with NCC Education's Regional Director Haridas Ramasamy and Business Development Manager Nayel Chowdhury successfully visited BIT and took a tour of the campus and met the students, teachers and management staff.

Managing Director of BIT A K M Azad met with NCC Education Team to discuss about the future plan of top up degree in Bangladesh.


7th Convocation of BRAC University held

The 7th Convocation of BRAC University was held on February 19 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Md Zillur Rahman, President, People's Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of BRAC University attend the ceremony as the chief guest. Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, Minister, Ministry of Education attended the ceremony as special guest, Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman, delivered the Convocation speech as Convocation Speaker. Former Ambassador Faruq Ahmad Choudhury, Member of BRACU Board of Trustees, also addressed the convocation with Professor Ainun Nishat, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University.

A total of 605 students were conferred degrees 394 students among them were from undergraduate programmes, and 211 students were from graduate programmes. Nusrat Jahan Dipa from the Bachelor of Social Science in Economics, Maria Matin from the Bachelor of Social Science in Economics and Nowrin Nowshaba from Masters of Biotechnology were awarded Chancellor's gold medals for their outstanding academic performance.


Academic Council Meeting of DIU held

3rd Academic Council Meeting of Daffodil International University was held on February 14 at the board room of the university. Professor M Lutfar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, DIU presided over the meeting. Md Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, DIU attended the meeting as Guest of Honour. Professor M Lutfar Rahman presented report on the overall academic activities of the university. Professor Dr Sharif Enamul Kabir, Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University and other members of the Academic Council praised the continuous development of DIU and its current initiative called 'One student: One laptop project'.


Orientation of Spring Semester held at IUB

Orientation programme for the newly enrolled students of School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS) at IUB in spring semester was held on February 9, 2012. The programme was hosted by Sanzid Salim, a third year student of EEE at IUB. The ceremony started with the introductory speech given by the Dean, Professor Mohammed Anwer. A colourful cultural programme was organised to welcome the freshers.


Seminar on Language Movement and
Emergence of Bangladesh held at PU

A seminar titled Language Movement and Emergence of Bangladesh took place on February 19, 2012 at Presidency University. The seminar was presided over by Professor Anwar Hossain, Vice Chancellor, Presidency University. Professor Nurur Rahman khan, senior Professor,

Department of Bangla, Dhaka University was present as the chief guest.

On this occasion Professor Dr Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Head of M H School of Business expressed content on the recent high court order on practicing Bangla correctly in the media. Professor Hossain opined in his speech that we need to increase skills in English language alongside practicing Bangla properly.


Seminar on Hospital Pharmacy

A seminar titled “Hospital Pharmacy: Changing Role of a Pharmacist in Treatment Plan” was held at the auditorium of the Department of Pharmacy, University of Asia Pacific (UAP). Abdul Quadir Choudhury, Clinical Pharmacist at Virginia Hudson Valley Health care System, New York, USA was the keynote speaker who described the role of hospital pharmacists who are experts in the field of medicines and are responsible for the dispensing of prescriptions along with purchase, manufacture and quality testing of all medicines used in a hospital. Professor M R Kabir, Acting Vice Chancellor, UAP was present as the chief guest while Kazi Ashfaq Ahmed, Registrar, UAP was the special guest.


Debate Competition for Underprivileged Students Launched

National debate competition titled 'Bitorko bikash' was formally launched on February 18. Around 40,000 under privileged students from eight thousand different non-government secondary level schools across the country will participate in the competition.

To organise the competition a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between BRAC, ATN Bangla and Debate for Democracy at the Basundhara City. Dr Joya Sen Gupta, General Manager, BRAC, Dr Mahfuzur Rahman, Chairman, ATN Bangla, and Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron, Chairman, Debate for Democracy signed the MOU on behalf of their respective organisations.


Publication Ceremony held at NUB

Department of Marketing Development, Promotion and Branding of Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) arranged a publication ceremony of the book 'South Asian Hope: SAARC, Will it Survive?' on February 19, at the Nazrul Moncho of Bangla Academy. It is the first publication of Professor Abu Yousuf Md Abdullah, Chairman, NUB Trust and Professor of IBA, Dhaka University. Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice-Chancellor, Dhaka University was the chief guest.

He thanked the writer for providing his valuable research oriented book in the sector of regional economy. He hoped that this piece might contribute in the economic development of South Asia.


International Workshop held on Migration in Bangladesh

From the February 20-24, the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), the University of Liberal Arts of Bangladesh (ULAB) and the Center for International Sustainable Law and Policy (CISDL) together with the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI SciencesPo), held an international workshop on 'Building the capacity to better manage environmentally induced migration in Bangladesh'. Being the first of its kind, it hosted 21 scholars, practitioners and other researchers from Asia and Europe with the aim of producing four academic articles of 3000 words to be internationally published. Participants were divided in four thematic sessions on Disaster Risk Reduction, Peri-Urban and Urban Planning, Human Rights and Security and Inclusiveness and worked both theoretically and practically to create a framework for environmentally induced migration. Dr Rathana peou van den Heuvel, Dr François Gemenne and Benoit Mayer closed the ceremony with the vote of thanks given by Dr Saleemul Huq, a Nobel Prize sharing IPCC representative.


New fellowship opportunity offered by SPEED Youth!

SPEED's youth development programme, SPEED Youth, is preparing and empowering youth (ages 12-18) to become healthy, competent, and contributing members of society and to undertake leadership roles in their communities. For this reason, SPEED is introducing the Youth Development Fellowship, focused on developing the skills of people working in the youth development field.

The programme will run from March through early June and consists of weekly sessions during the work week, 1-2 Saturday sessions a month, homework assignments and a weekend long retreat March 23-25. In addition, there is a three month practical training with SPEED Youth from June to August (minimum of 5 hours a week). After successful completion of programme they will have opportunities for part-time/full time employment with SPEED at the end of the Fellowship; Leadership Training; Skill development; and certification.


Cultural Programme on Ekush held at UT

Like every year, Universal Tutorial, an English medium school, located in New Eskaton area of Dhaka city observed Ekushe programme at its school premise. Students from different classes participated in recitation, reading out articles and rendering songs on Ekushe theme. The programme was inaugurated by its principal Dr Faruq Aziz Khan.
