Inter-School Volleyball Tournament sponsored by South Breeze

South Breeze sponsored an Inter-school Volleyball Tournament organised by Bangladesh Volleyball Federation which took place from March 15-17 at the National Volleyball stadium. Volleyball teams from twelve schools including Baridhara Rajuk School, Sunnydale, Scholastica, St Joseph, Badshah Faisal Institute, Badda Aytunnesa School, Summerfield School, Jatrabari Biddut Unnoyon Board School, Bangladesh International School, Shena Polli School, and South Breeze participated.

The final was played between Rajuk and Scholastica. Rajuk stood the champion and Scholastica and South Breeze stood as the first and second runners-up respectively. In the girls' tournament team Scholastica gained the first position while BIT and Viqarunnisa Noon School stood as the first and second runners-up respectively. The winning teams were awarded with bronze medals by Zeenat Chowdhury, Principal, South Breeze. Pepsi sponsored the tournament. G Q Chowdhury, Managing Director, Pepsi encouraged the players with his presence.


Seminar on Urban Health held at SUB

A seminar titled 'Cost of Urban Health Care' was held at State University of Bangladesh (SUB) organised by the Department of Public Health on March 23. Dr Sushil Ranjan Howlader, Professor and Founder Director, Institute of Health Economics, University of Dhaka, delivered the keynote paper while Major Gen (Retd) Dr M Shahjahan, Treasurer, SUB was present as the chairperson.

Professor Howlader presented the definition, importance of cost estimates, basic concepts and theories of costing. While talking on the cost of urban health care, he emphasised on the importance of conducting a comprehensive research on the issue.

Dr Nawzia Yasmin, Head and Academic Programme Director, Department of Public Health, SUB conducted the seminar where faculty members and students of the MPH Programme participated interactively.


Photo Exhibition organised by UIUPJC

The Photography and Journalism Club of United International University (UIUPJC) organised a three day long photo exhibition titled 'Expose Your Creativity' from March 27-31. The exhibition was inaugurated by Professor M Rezwan Khan, Vice-Chancellor, UIU. Professor Habibur Rahman, Dean, UIU business school, Sumon Ahmed, Director, Students' Affair, UIU, Behroz Jalil, Deputy Director, UIU business school were also present.

From 170 photos, 30 photos selected by the jury were exhibited in the hall of UIU campus-2. A documentary on Photography was screened on March 28. Theme for the exhibition was not a fixed one, to allow the young photographers of UIU to come up with utmost creativity.


Career Fair held at UIU

A two-day long Career Fair titled 'Prothom Alo Jobs UIU Career Fair 2012' was held at the United International University (UIU) recently. The Career Counseling Centre of the university organised the event jointly with Prothom Alo Jobs. At the fair, 27 different kinds of companies, certification bodies and institutions presented their organisations' profiles and offered internships, part-time and full-time jobs.

The participating organisations were BRAC, City Bank, Citycell, United Group, Gallerie Apex, Viyellatex Group, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd, Lambirds, Eduaid, Gemcon Group, Chartered Institute of Management Accounts and many more.


ISD holds Bangla Language Competition 2012

The Bangla Club of International School, Dhaka (ISD) held its 2nd Annual Bangla Language Competition 2012 on March 17- which included debate, recitals, and quiz. The event kicked off with an 'Interactive Question and Answer Session' where Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and Anisul Hoque were guest speakers. In this segment, students inquired on several topics ranging from culture, history, language movement and the future of Bangladesh.

The debate competition was held on the topic, 'Excessive use of English in English Medium schools is an obstacle to practise Bangla', which was judged by Anisul Hoque. 'Maa go ora bole' by Abu Jafar Obaidullah was the poem for recital competition which was judged by eminent actress Shompa Reza. Eleven schools, including International School Dhaka, Aga Khan School Dhaka, Sunbeams, Playpen, DPS STS School, Scholastica, Sunnydale, Greenherald International School, Sir John Wilson School, Oxford International School, and Manarat Dhaka International School participated. Sunnydale School stood as winner of the competition.


WUB Gold Medal Award Ceremony 2012 held

On March 21, 2012, World University of Bangladesh (WUB) honoured Abdul Matin, hero of language movement, Abdur Razzak, freedom fighter and North-East sector Chief of Mujib Bahini, and Lt Col (Retd), Abu Osman Choudhury, commander of sector 8 during the liberation war of 1971 with 'World University of Bangladesh Gold Medal'. Farida Razzak, wife of late Abdur Razzak and his two sons Nahim Razzak MP and Mr Fahim Razzak received the medal.
