Seminar on Ecological Agriculture at ULAB

The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) jointly organised a seminar on 'Impact of Genetic Engineering and Importance of Biodiversity Based Ecological Agriculture' on September 1, 2012, at the ULAB Auditorium. Around 70 participants (including students, faculty members and NGO representatives) took part in the seminar, which was presided over by Shafiqul Islam, Assistant Professor, Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), ULAB. Michael K Hansen, PhD, Senior Staff Scientist, Policy and Advocacy Division, Consumers Union, USA, spoke on impacts of Bt crops and Golden Rice on human health, environment and socioeconomic conditions.


Workshop at JKKNIU

A workshop was held at the auditorium of administrative building of Jatiyo Kobi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) on September 4, 2012. The workshop titled 'Updating Academic Curriculum at Undergraduate and Master's Levels' was held under Academic Innovation Fund (AIF). Deputy Manager of the project and Dean of Science and Technology Faculty of JKKNIU Professor Dr Md Abul Bashar presided over the workshop.


World Cerebral Palsy Day observed

Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) observed the World Cerebral Palsy Day at its head office at Savar, Dhaka on September 4, 2012. The welcome speech was delivered by the Head of Pediatric Department of CRP, Hosne Ara Parveen. Following her speech, special guest Dr Anisa Jahan, Associate Professor, Child Development and Neurology delivered a speech on Cerebral Palsy related matters, complexities of this disease, prevention methods, treatment procedures, etc. Honourary medals were given to five mothers of cerebral palsy children including Valerie Taylor, Founder and Coordinator of CRP.


Exhibition on 'Access to ICT for Persons with Disabilities' at DIU

To provide a general orientation on available ICT tools and devices for persons with disabilities to enable them to have a better life with dignity, a two day long 'International Exhibition on Access to ICT for persons with disabilities' took place at the Daffodil International University (DIU) auditorium. Center for Disability in Development (CDD) in association with DIU organised this exhibition from September 5-6, 2012 with the support of Karishma Enterprises from India and Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF). Md Nazrul Islam Khan, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh, inaugurated the exhibition as the chief guest.


Workshop for Teachers at DIS

Daffodil International School (DIS) organised a teachers development training workshop on September 8, 2012, at the seminar room of Daffodil International University, with a view to enrich the quality and standards of education at the school. Professor Dr Yousuf M Islam, Executive Director, HRD Institute of Daffodil International University, conducted the daylong workshop. Rahima K Mirza (Rosemary), Vice Principal, along with 14 teachers of DIS were present at the workshop.


Workshop on Career Development at Presidency University

The School of Business of Presidency University organised a workshop on Internship and Career Development in Business Sector on September 6, 2012 at Aman Conference Hall, Gulshan, Dhaka. Presided over by Professor Dr Muhammad Mahboob Ali, the workshop highlighted issues like the lack of practically oriented manpower in our country.


IN REMEMBRANCE
 
The North South University deeply mourns the demise of Muslehuddin Ahmad, the founder, President/Vice Chancellor of North South University. He was suffering with serious diseases and passed away at Square hospital on September 10, 2012. The Board of Trustees Chair M A Hashem and Vice Chancellor Dr Hafiz G A Siddiqi expressed their deep shock and prayed for his departed soul.

Social Business Students Forum, DIU meets Dr Muhammad Yunus

The members of Daffodil International University (DIU) Social Business Cell and Social Business Students Forum visited the Yunus Centre on September 4, 2012, and had a meeting with Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus. A total of 35 participants including five faculty members of DIU joined the meeting. Dr Muhammad Yunus discussed with the students, the necessity and aspects of social business in the society.


Green University organised Scholars' Reception

Green University of Bangladesh (GUB) organised a reception programme on September 7, 2012, for the meritorious achievers of the HSC Examination 2012. The reception was held at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium at Mirpur, Dhaka. Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of Green University Professor Dr Quazi Deen Md Khosru presided over the programme. The welcome speech was delivered by Mohammed Abdullah Al-Mamun, Chairman, Board of Trustees, GUB. Architect Yafes Osman, State Minister of Science and Technology was present as the chief guest while Professor Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and Professor Dr M Kaykobad were present as special guests. About 7,000 students were presented with medals from the university.


German textile experts conduct workshop at NITTRAD

A six-day Training of Trainers (ToT) Programme was held at the National Institute of Textile Training Research and Design (NITTRAD), Nayerhat, Savar from September 2-7, 2012. The ToT programme was conducted by internationally acclaimed textile wet processing expert Evelyn Lempa and Joerg Schrick from Niederrhein University of Germany. The training programme was attended by faculty members of different textile universities, colleges and technical personnel working in the textile enterprises of the country. The experts discussed different aspects of ecology, effluent and dyeing, finishing in knit-wear and other aspects.
