ICT issues contempt rule against 2 Jamaat leaders
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on February 7 issued a show cause notice on two Jamaat-e-Islami leaders to explain why contempt of court proceeding should not be initiated against them for their 'instigating and derogatory remarks' about the tribunal. The Jamaat leaders are: Hamidur Rahman Azad MP, a central executive member of Jamaat, and Selim Uddin, an assistant secretary of the Jamaat city unit. The three-member tribunal led by its Chairman Justice Obaidul Hassan asked the Jamaat leaders to appear before the tribunal on February 20 with their explanations. The tribunal issued the notice on the basis of reports published in The Daily Star and Bangla daily Prothom Alo on February 5. The reports said the two leaders made the 'instigating and derogatory comments' while delivering speeches at a political gathering in the city on February 4. -The Daily Star online edition February 7 2012.

Rizvi gets bail in vandalism case
The High Court on February 7 granted anticipatory bail for two months to BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a vandalism case. The case was filed against him with Paltan Police Station on charge of vandalising a city corporation garbage truck during the opposition's countrywide road blockade on December 9 last year. The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Jahangir Hossain passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by Rizvi on February 7. - The Daily Star online edition February 7, 2013.

Mirza Fakhrul freed
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was released from jail on February 5 on bail nearly two months after his arrest. The High Court granted him ad interim bail for six months on February 4 in the sixth case concerning violence during the road blockade by the BNP-led opposition alliance on December 9 last year. Last month, the BNP leader got bail from the HC in five other cases filed with different police stations in the capital in connection with arson, vandalism and rampage during the road blockade. But each time he was implicated in another case and shown arrested. Fakhrul was arrested on December 11 last year in the first of six cases and sent to jail. -The Daily Star February 6 2013.

Tarique, Koko to face court by Feb 26
A Dhaka court on February 4 again summoned BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman and eight other directors of Dandy Dyeing Ltd, and two others to it by February 26 in a case filed for defaulting on a loan payment of Tk 45.49 crore. The court also asked the court authorities to publish an advertisement in the daily Prothom Alo and the daily Inqilab asking them to appear before it. Judge Md Rabiuzzaman of the Artharin Adalat-1 passed the order after all the earlier notices upon the defendants could not be served as none at their respective addresses received those. Earlier on October 23 last year, the same court issued the summons. On October 2 last year, Sonali Bank Ltd filed the case against the eleven, including Tarique, Koko, after their company failed to pay off the principal loan plus interest, accumulated over the last 11 years, totalling Tk 45.49 crore. -The Daily Star February 5 2013.

HC to explain alleged vote rigging in BMA polls
The High Court on February 4 asked the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed to investigate the allegations of irregularities occurred during Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) election held on November 29, 2012. Following a writ petition filed on December 13, 2012, by Dr Syed Md Akram Hossain, a joint secretary of Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB), an organisation of pro-BNP doctors, the court issued the rule. In the writ, he alleged that vote rigging, maladministration and manipulations took place in the BMA election. In the poll, pro-Awami League Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) won all the 41 posts of the BMA central executive committee and DAB rejected the poll result. -The Daily Star February 5 2013.

HC summons ex-SC registrar on contempt of court charge
The High Court on February 3 summoned former Supreme Court registrar Iktedar Ahmed before it on February 10 in connection with a contempt of court petition. Tarek MR Chowdhury, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition yesterday accusing Itkedar of trying to damage the image of judiciary by writing an article to a Bangla daily. The Dainik Nirapekkho on January 28 published the article written by Itkedar. The article was about desperate greed, prevention of unjust conducts and appropriate enforcement of law. The HC also issued a upon Iktedar to explain within 10 days why he should not be punished for committing contempt of court by writing the article. -The Daily Star February 4 2013.
