"Ladies and gentlemen, we got him."
Paul Bremer, US Administrator in Iraq, declaring the arrest of Saddam Hussein.

"I am Saddam Hussein, I'm the president of Iraq and I'm willing to negotiate." Major Brian Reed, operations officer for the first brigade of the Fourth Infantry Division, quoting Saddam as saying when the former president was found hiding in a hole at a hut.

"With our blood, with our soul we will defend you Saddam Hussein." Demonstrators who gathered to protest the arrest of the deposed president.

"None is stopping me from running my store as a Tk 500 bribe to a drug superintendent is enough to solve the problem." A drugstore owner who runs an unauthorised dispensary.

"We have only six superintendents who are overwhelmed with heavy workload at the desk." Abdul Gani, director of Bangladesh Drug Administration, which gives licence to the drugstores.

“The people of the area are frustrated." MP Mohammad Shahjahan, explaining the reason for incidents that left 34 lynched in his area in Noakhali.

"I have three children and there is none to look after them." A woman, whose husband was killed by the mob in Noakhali.

"American citizens in Bangladesh should remain vigilant, particularly in public places frequented by foreigners, including but not limited to hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, and places of worship." A US State department announcement alerting its citizens to potential threats against US interests in Bangladesh.

"Suppose, I got 50,000 votes, and my opponents all together secured 70,000 votes. In the existing system I will be elected a lawmaker. Do I represent the majority?" M Saifur Rahman, finance minister. Saifur believes the electoral system should be amended to strengthen democracy.

"The basic problem is the dearth of credible persons." Shah AMS Kibria, former finance minister at a seminar on parliamentary democracy organised by the Jatya Sangsad and UNDP.

"It was all rather wonderfully formal." Mick Jagger, rockstar and once a scourge of the British establishment, when he was knighted by prince Charles at the Buckingham Palace.
