Unforgettable February

Zahedul I Khan

Shaheed Dibosh (the language martyr's day) or Ekushey is an unforgettable event for the Bangalis of Bangladesh. Few nations have fought so valiantly to preserve their mother tongue, which they hold so sacred. On this day every year Bangalis wearing black visit the Shaheed Minar to pay respect to those people who boldly gave up their lives so that we could tell stories to our children in this beautiful language. Now the whole world recognises the significance of this day. In November 1999 it was declared the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO. The Bangalis have shown the entire world what a substantial part of a person's cultural/ethnic identity the language is.
