From Jhenidah

Harinakundu Priyanath

Azibor Rahman

Harinakundu Priyanath High school is one of the oldest in this country. Harinakundu Priyanath was established in 1872 with the patronage of Girindranath Roy and Priyanath Roy. During its foundation the school was in a dilapidated state. In the course of time the school flourished. Although the oldest in Jhenidah district, infrastructural development lags behind.

The dilapidated school building stood on a vast piece of land. It was founded on two acres of land with a few building, trees and a big playground. This school lies in the heart of Harinakundu upazila town.

There has hardly ever been a year when students from this school have not secured places in public examinations under the Jessore board. These meritorious students have gone on to serve the nation in different ways. The school since its inception has produced many students who have gone on to become eminent scholars. Among its brightest alumni, are Atiur Rahman, BSC Engineer Dhaka, Rafiqul Alam Bulu, Secretary of Ministry of Power and Energy, Kazi Moniruzzaman, ASP of Manikganj, Rezaul Karim, Lieutenant Colonel and Rokonuzzaman, Administration Officer of Rajshahi Board. This year 67% of the examinees passed in the SSC examination, 6 students obtained GPA 5 and 6 students secured junior scholarships.

However it is a matter of regret this old school has not yet been nationalised. The acting headmaster and former headmaster have tried two twice to nationalise this reputed school but in vain.

The many headmasters who have given dedicated service throughout the years deserve recognition. Their names follow:

Shib Mitra in 1872, Harendra Nath Roy, Md. Abdul Gafur, Md. Khalilur Rahman, Md. Maula Box, Md. Moslem uddin, 1972-2006, and Md. Saiful Hossain

Gopal Chandra Biswas is presently the headmaster of the institution. He claims that no building has yet been sanctioned since 1990 except the facilities building. The accommodation capacity is proving to be insufficient for the students.
