A Stand Against Drugs on Pahela Boishakh

ON the first of Boishakh, or April 14th, the first day of the Bengali New Year was celebrated with a colourful parade in Netrokona. Scarecrows and mailmen were features of the parade. The theme of this year's celebration was, “No to drugs, enjoy youth”. Present at the event were local parliament member Asraf Ali Khan Khasru, Netrokona model thana ASP Md. Ibrahim Khan, local veteran Dr. M A Hamid Khan, The Daily Star Readers' Club Netrokona President Ram Sankar Sarkar, ABC president Kamruzzaman Chaudhury, local daily Janonetra Editor M Moklesur Rahman, journalists Sanjoy Sarker (Dainik Janakantha), Md. Abdullah (Dainik Inqilab) and many others. Around 150 youths took their stand against drugs. The parade marched through the main streets of the district. People of all ages and classes joined in. The Daily Star Readers' Club, Netrakona and ABC (Association for Better Community) a local organisation jointly arranged the programme. B K Sarker Lalon, General Secretary of The Daily Star Readers' Club and ABC coordinated and led the programme.
