Dr. Harisankar Das: A Man of Compassion

There are those like Dr. Harisankar Das, an eye specialist residing in Charpara, Mymenshing, whose tries to give back to the society. He renders free service for an hour every day for poor patients at his Paramita Eye Hospital. If only we could learn from those like him and be inspired to make an individual contribution in making the society more livable, perhaps Bangladesh would be a more prosperous nation.

“I am also taking preparations to hand over my four-story eye hospital under a trustee board so that people can take treatment facilities from there at lower cost in the future”, said Dr. Das. “Being a doctor, I realize that I have a moral and a social responsibility - to do something for the society where hundreds of people live who have very little access to minimum healthcare facilities even today,” Dr. Das opined.

Son of late Indu Bhusan Das and Renuka Prova Das, he has been rendering his free treatment scheme since 1980. He handles about 300 poor patients per month and feels greatly rewarded doing the free work. At times, the doctor also supports poor patients with free medicine. Ambia Khatun, 65, a poor widow who visited Dr. Das twice informed Star Insight that now she feels better and is extremely grateful to Dr. Das for providing treatment to her without any fee.

Born at Das Bari of Nikla village under Bhuapur upazila of Tangail, Dr. Das passed his MBBS from Mymensingh Medical College in 1974. Later he earned his post graduation degree from Vienna, Austria. Dr. Das worked at the eye department of Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital as Clinical Assistant, Registar and Resident Surgeon. Since becoming a doctor in 1980, he has traveled each and every corner of greater Mymensingh and parts of Dhaka, Sylhet and Pabna and joined many eye camps as chief surgeon conducted by Bangladesh National Society for the Blind (BNSB).

For his services to the people, mainly the poor, Dr. Das obtained the “Lifetime Achievement Award 2011” given by Bangladesh Ophthalmological Society. At a programme held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka in March this year, Chief Guest and Honourable President Md. Zillur Rahman handed over the award. Dr. Das, also the Secretary of Mymensingh District Corruption Prevention Committee, has received awards from different organizations including Sheba Ratna Purushkar offered by Mymensingh Sheba Niketan in 2004.

Dr. Das is also associated with many philanthropic organizations including National Tuberculosis Society (Natab), BNSB, Lions Club and Sheba Niketan. He also holds the post of President of different organizations including Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Private Practitioners Association district unit. Dr. Das currently employs 50 persons at his hospital. Dr. Das calls out to doctors, saying “Do something for the people and they will remember you forever. The money you have earned will be useless to you one day, but the value of your services for the ailing humanity will twinkle as bright stars in people's hearts.”
