Manipuri Festival 2012

The 3-day 'Manipuri Uthsab 2012' was held at Sylhet from 10-12 April 2012 with the participation of Manipuris from different areas of the greater Sylhet division. It was organized by 'Friends in Village Development, Bangladesh' (FIVDB), a leading NGO of the region, in association with the Toyota Foundation with the view to focus on the vibrant community.

Manipuris from different areas of the greater Sylhet division joined in the 3-day 'Manipuri Uthsab-2012', which was inaugurated at Sylhet on 10th April, 2012. It was organized by 'Friends in Village Development, Bangladesh' (FIVDB), a leading NGO of the region in association with the Toyota Foundation. The view was to focus on the vibrant community; according to the announcement made by the organizers at a press conference at the Sylhet press club.

The event was held at the city's Hafiz Complex. The program included a seminar, cultural functions and a discussion session with journalists, businessmen and cultural personalities on issues related to the Manipuri community.

Festival committee member-Zahed Ahmed, coordinator-Enayet Us Islam, and senior program organizer-Chowdhury Fazle Nur Ismat of the FIVDB addressed the conference while eminent Manipuri personalities - poet A. K. Sheram and Rana Kumar Sinha were present among others.

The organizers said the main objective of the event was to further enrich the ethnic culture, which has a long historical background. Besides, a bridging program was also arranged to link the traditional Manipuri weavers, traders and exporters since the community's womenfolk lack access to proper marketing facilities of their produce. Traditional weaving was also displayed.

A seminar was held on the Manipuri culture while veteran educationist and writer Professor Dr. Syed Manzurul Islam, writer - researcher Professor Dr. Hayat Mamud and Bela's chief Syeda Rizwana Hasan addressed the audience.
