Journey Through Bangladesh

Sunamganj

Paying Homage to a Martyr

The entire northern region of Bangladesh was once haunted by scarcity and poverty. During the last few years, farmers concentrated on profitable crops with minimum costs. Starting from Tangail, right down to the end of the northern part, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Panchgarh, banana farming has increased overwhelmingly. It's a long-term farming method – but because the low cost of production, farmers are choosing banana farming to gradually eradicate poverty.

It is after 41 years, the death anniversary of Gias Uddin Ahmed, student of Sunamganj Sarkari College, who sacrificed his life in the 1971 liberation war, was observed for the first time this year.

The office bearers of 'Shahid Jagot Jyoti Gias Taleb smriti Parishad' along with others paid their respect to the martyr by placing floral wreaths on the Shahid Jagot Jyoti Gias Taleb memorial, established on the campus of the college on 29 September.

A number of students, teachers and journalists were also present. College Principal Soyful Karim Chowdhury, associate professors Nilima Chanda and Salehin Chowdhury Shuvo, Mahmudur Rahman Tarek, Maidur Russel among others also addressed on the occasion.

Student of BA first year, Gias Uddin embraced martyrdom in a face-to-face fight with the Pakistan Army at a remote village of Derai upazila of Sunamganj during the liberation war. Just after the gunfight, the invading army captured him. He was tortured and killed. His body could not be traced out later.
