The first Shahid minar of the Sylhet city was rebuilt with a new design and shape this year in the name of 'Drishtipat'. It was formally inaugurated on 15th December, 2012. On this day in 1971, Sylhet town was freed towards the end of the liberation war.
In 1967, it was built on the campus of Madan Mohan College at the city's Rikabibazar r area beside the main road, now known as VIP ROAD. However, along with many other structures in the city, it was destroyed during the liberation war by the Pakistani forces. After the independence, the then students union of the college rebuilt it in 1972.
The Sylhet city corporation rebuilt it this year with a new design and shape at an expenditure of Taka 19 lakh. City mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran formally inaugurated the newly built Shahid minar 'Drishtipat' in presence of College authority and others in good number.
Rabindra Sangeet exponent Rana Kumar Sinha performed the National anthem at the begining of the brief function. The college Principal, Abul Foteh Fattah, the structure's designer, Rajon Dass, a good number of students, teachers and others were present on the college campus. Special prayers were also offered after the unveiling of the 'Drishtipat'.
