How Dhaka Expands

Bamboo fences are built in the Dhaleshwari long way from the shore at Dikrir Char of Narayanganj so that the area encircled could be filled with earth for a housing project. A worker, inset, is seen building the fence with water up to his nose.

An unapproved housing project fills up the floodplains of the significantly narrowed down Balu in Khilkhet of the capital and builds two-storey mansions to lure in upper middleclass buyers. The aerial shot was taken recently.

Kamrangirchar in the middle of the Buriganga divides the water flow of the river into two channels. The channel further away in this aerial photo has been blocked by grabbers (not visible in the image).
Sand traders encroach on the Shitalakkhya up to about the middle of the river near Kanchpur Bridge in Narayanganj.

This photo taken recently from an aircraft shows a large housing project gradually devouring the Balu at Rupganj in the capital. The project area begins in Baridhara but it is evident that the river is being filled up on one side by the project, marked, while the other bank is occupied by brick kilns.
