Introduction to Acting

The English Department Drama Society (EDDS) of the English department, University of Dhaka held a workshop on acting titled “Introduction to Acting” on 16 September 2006. The Dean, Faculty of Arts and Chairman of English Department, Prof. Sadrul Amin inaugurated the workshop. He encouraged the students to be more involved in extra curricular activities along with their studies. Ms. Tahmina Ahmed, the teacher-in-charge of EDDS said in her speech: “Acting is the development of not only your skills but also your personality. We focus on the students' overall development so that they are confident and ready to face any challenge.”

The event was organised by the new executive committee of EDDS comprising of nine students of the department. This committee was formed on 20 August 2006 and is looking forward to arranging more such events in future.

EDDS' aim is “Drama for a better human being”. It gives the students the chance to discover their latent talents and also helps understand literature better. EDDS usually stages plays both in Bangla and English.

Upol Biswas Apu: (the facilitator of the workshop)
Upol completed his Masters from the English department last year and works at the Standard Chartard Bank as a branch risk officer. His last project with EDDS was in May this year when he acted as “Helmer” in Ibsen's “A Doll's House”. All through his student years he has acted in many productions and also worked as the Vice president of the previous Executive Committee of EDDS.

His first on stage recital was when he was 4 years old. It was an open-air programme with one thousand people in the audience. He has been acting from Class 3, and in professional theatre from 1997. He got his diploma certificate in Drama from Kushtia Shilpakala Academy, and has worked with the “Gono Natto Songstha”. He has also acted in various street dramas and dramas related to social awareness in different parts of the country. He works as a consultant with the “Palakar” Theatre and helps in guiding them in acting and translating English dramas.

Upol was the Prime Minister's Gold Medalist in National Acting Championship in 2000.

He has taken part in workshops conducted by Badal Sarkar of Kolkata, Muttalib Biswas of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Prof. Syed Jamil Ahmed of Music of Theatre Department, Dhaka University.

Workshop events: In the beginning students were introduced to each other in a circle. After this icebreaking session, they were told to walk around the place to the rhythm of the traditional instrument KHOL. It gave them the idea of spacing in any kind of stage. Theatre games on concentration such as the mirror game with the help of a tennis ball made all the participants laugh. It's a game where two persons stand at a distance. Both of them ask a question to his partner and bounce the ball to him. The partner catches the ball and answers the question.

A good actor has to have observing power to see everyday characters around him and be able to imitate them. Acting is the imitation of life. An actor has to be disciplined and punctual to rehearsals. He has to be committed and dedicated to the play he is acting in. The facilitator explained these qualities. While acting, the whole focus and concentration of an actor should be his work.

There was an improvising game that focuses one's imagination. The participants were told to walk around the stage with slow /fast music. When the music stopped, they had to get into postures they wanted and had to make up a reason why they were in that position.

Feedback: The participants enjoyed it very much but they said that the time limit of three hours was too short. They want more of such events with longer durations in the future so that they can learn more.
