ICCIT 2006 underlines role of ICT in socio-economic advancement

The research papers presented at the Ninth International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (ICCIT 2006) assessed the present stage of development of computer and information technology in Bangladesh and stressed on the necessity of excellence, expansion and use of it in national development. The conference this year focused on the role of ICT for developing better society. Apart from technical papers, the hardcore topics were on the role of ICT in the field of health, education, ethical issues, public security and such other subjects.

The three-day conference, organized by IUB which was opened on last Thursday at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre concluded on Saturday night December 23. The conference was inaugurated by the well-known industrialist and IUB Trust Chairman Mr Towhid Samad and addressed by the Chairman International Programme Committee Prof. Mohammad A Karim of Old Dominion University, USA, IUB Vice Chancellor Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, IUB Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Omar Rahman and Prof. M Anwer, Chairman of Organizing Committee and Director of IUB School of Engineering and Computer Science.

In his speech, Mr Towhid Samad stated that the world has now traveled into the information age from the last industrial age. ICT has become the driving force of the society whether it is industries, business or education. Academics of Bangladesh are required to play due role so that new ICT innovations are utilised for the benefit of the country.

Dr Mohammad A Karim, Vice-President, Research, Old Dominion University, USA introducing the subject stated the tremendous influence ICT has brought about on the society. New ideas and techniques are coming in the field every day as new engines propelling the society. Talking on this year's conference he said that the number of quality papers received has increased greatly and the trend of conference in Bangladesh seems to be going in right direction.

Vice Chancellor Prof Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury stated that ICT can play the most influential role in mass education and identified four fields i.e., IT education/training, ICT tools in primary education, computerisation of school & college laboratories and research initiatives at universities. In his welcome address, Prof Dr Omar Rahman said that with the passage of every day ICT is more intricately entering into our lives and creating digital divide in the society. A conscious and necessary initiatives have to be taken to reduce the divide, and excess to ICT is the key to our success, he observed. Prof M Anwer, in his concluding speech, stated that the primary endeavours of this conference is to relate ICT to our society and disseminate the ideas at different levels for the benefit of researchers.

This year 445 research papers were submitted for consideration of the International Programme committee which includes IT academics from a number of foreign universities of USA, UK and other countries of Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan and India. Out of these papers international reviewers selected 117 papers for presentation at the Conference. Apart from presentation of research papers on technical subjects, the speakers focused on such issues -- ICT infrastructure, legal frame work, skilled work force, ICT research development, ICT for social development, ICT in business, industries, banking and finance, good governance, etc.

The efforts for providing a platform to computer researchers, scientists and academics started by out IT academics in 1997 to establish a link with global IT initiatives and the first international conference on computer and information technology was organised by Dhaka University in 1998. Since then every year ICCIT has been held providing the platform for researchers in Bangladesh and overseas to share their experience and publicize their research findings.
