President inaugurates 3rd convocation of Khulna University

President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday warned against the growing gap between urban and rural educational facilities, saying that such a trend would eventually lead the nation towards an unpleasant consequence. "It appears that the meritorious students of rural areas are being lost somewhere. But unless we can pick up meritorious people from remote corners of Bangladesh, the eventual gap of merit between urban and rural areas will yield an unpleasant result," he told the 3rd convocation ceremony of Khulna University (KU).

The president said currently the urban-based educational facilities were dominating the merit list of public examinations discarding the rural ones while "there was a time when meritorious people used to come from remote corners." "I call upon the people concerned to take necessary steps to improve the quality of education in the educational institutions in rural areas," he said.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr SMA Faiz attended the function as the convocation speaker while senate and syndicate members joined it along with nearly 2,500 graduates who were awarded degrees under 16 disciplines. Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman chaired the function.

Appreciating the Khulna University's special emphasis on researches on local natural resources, President Iajuddin said it is a good initiative to explore the potential of the region. "I hope the results to be found from these researches will unveil the dormant potential of the region which will be a great achievement on the part of the entire nation," he said. Laying emphasis on quality education, the president said that despite increased literacy rate and enrolment in universities, the standard of education is yet to reach to the desired level. He urged the education planners to design a proper education system so that the students could meet the challenges using their knowledge and skills and at the same time, the universities become the centres of researches that could be used for the welfare of people.

Inter University Debate Competition: Metropolitan University Team Champion

Metropolitan University Team became champions in the debate competition organized by the Rotaract Club of Sylhet Surma. The theme of the competition was Juktir Dahone Purao Dondo (Burn disputes with the power of reasoning). Murari Chand College Team won the runner's up trophy.

The inter-university debate competition was the first ever of its kind in Sylhet. There have been debate competitions at college level, but this was the first such attempt for university students. Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Metropolitan University (MU), Leading University (LU), Sylhet International University (SIU), Murari Chand University College (MCUC) and a few other well-reputed institutions participated in the competition.

The inaugural program was held at Metropolitan University. Professor Dr. Kabir H. Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, Metropolitan University, launched the program.

The topic of the final was 'Not antagonism to globalization; rather overcoming challenges of it can advance the third world'. The Metropolitan University Team was against the motion. The team leader was Ponkoj Bhattacharjee who is a student of Freshman 3rd Term of the English Department. He was judged the best orator. Mr. Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury, Registrar, SUST, moderated the program.

The Chief Guest of the award ceremony was Professor Dr. ABM Shahidul Islam, Vice Chancellor of Leading University.

Seminar at Independent University, Bangladesh

A seminar titled ''Determinants of contractive use among women workers in urban slums of Dhaka'' was held on March 15 at the IUB, Baridhara campus.

The event was organised by the Centre for Health, Population and Development (CHPD). Prof. Nashid Kamal was the featured speaker at the seminar. Vice Chancellor of IUB and executive director of CHPD, Professor Omar Rahman moderated the seminar. A presentation session was held which featured various factors which influences the contraceptive uses by women workers in the urban slums of Dhaka. A discussion followed the presentation. It was a well attended event.

IT Fair held at KUET

It Fair, after rocking other big cities of Bangladesh started in JIA HALL, Khulna from 1st of February and continued till 3rd 2007. IT fair 2007 KHULNA section was organized by BASIS and sponsored by one of the largest telecom companies- CITY-CELL. This fair also took place in CHITTAGONG, DHAKA, SYLHET, and RAJSHAHI. Many people visited and shared their views in this fair. KUET CSC department played a vital role to arrange it and they also participated successfully and demonstrated some brilliant projects. Thanks to Prof Dr. M.M.A HASAM sir who works so hard and encouraged our students to participate it. This fair offered the students many part time job opportunities and also a clear conception of our future job market. I myself had the opportunity to visit the fair on Friday. The entrance was looking quite stunning, decorated with balloons and festoons. When I entered the main corridor I saw a large gathering in KUET stall. What's happening? I wondered. It was a quite exciting show put on by our fellow mates. SMS Compressor and Home security system were two outstanding projects, which developed by two 4th year KUETian Kowser and Ashif. For the first time in Bangladesh a mobile 3D game developed by Riad and Minaz also took general attention. More than 20 projects were presented on behalf of KUET students and Each and every project satisfied the people's interest. The software developers in other stalls were also busy in showing their projects. Information technology is an un-detachable part of our modernized life and fairs like this most hopefully will bring awareness in mass people of Bangladesh, and that is the most expected thing in the new millennium for us.

Seminar on 'Religious history in Bengal' at Dhaka University

A weekly seminar on “ Religious history in Bengal” was held on March 15 at the seminar room of the department of World Religions, DU. Prof. Dr Toseph T. O' Connell visiting professor of World Religions, DU delivered the keynote speech. The event was a well-attended one with many sociologists, technologists, historians and some faculty members of both DU and foreign universities attending it. The event was presided over by Prof. EVA Sadia Saad, head of the World Religion department. The seminar will be held every week o n Thursdays from 12:00-01:30pm for two weeks.

Smoke-free Campus at IBA

As of 5th March 2006, the Institute of Business Administration has declared its campus to be a smoke-free area. In doing so IBA has become the first public education institute in the country to officially declare its campus a non-smoking zone.

Students often initiate smoking or become heavier smokers while in college. A casual smoke with friends can lead to a life long habit and addiction to tobacco. Therefore, the best place to discourage students from smoking is on campus. Furthermore, secondhand smoke is a dangerous public health hazard. The IBA community is very pleased to take this step forward for the health and safety of all its students.
