ICT seminar 2008: Bangladeshi ICT Expertise in USA was held at Stamford University, Bangladesh Siddeswari Campus on 03 January. The seminar was organised jointly by the Department of Computer Science and Biggani.org.

ACCA Courses Launched at SPEED

With an urge to create an upheaval in the field of Finance, where the demand for qualified professionals are already exceeding the number of qualified individuals, SPEED (Services for Professionals Education and Enterprise Development) launched courses under Association of Standard Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification, based in the U.K.

Ms Madiha Murshed, the Deputy Managing Director and Head of Academics, while sharing her views in the Press Conference held at SPEED on the 7th of January, 2008, said "ACCA is the largest and fastest growing professional accountancy body. It is a rapidly growing qualification in Bangladesh because accounting and finance are careers in demand both in this country and around the world. "

The ACCA professional scheme is designed to provide the accounting knowledge, skills and professional values which will deliver finance professionals who are capable of building successful career across all sectors whether it is public or private, practicing in accounting firms or pursuing career in business.

While discussing the programs offered by ACCA, Ms Murshed added, “Among the two programs, CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) qualification is a combination of study and practical experience designed to build knowledge in accountancy, IT and Management. The Professional Scheme on the other hand is for those who are in the accountancy or finance profession.”

The requirements for the Professional scheme course says that it is open for students with 3 O' levels and 2 A' levels (Accounting or Maths and Economics or Business Studies). On the other hand The CAT course does not require much formal qualification, therefore is open to students who passed Class X or O' level at least. Furthermore, to enable students to study for a B.Sc (Hons) in applied accounting while taking their ACCA exams, the program has entered into a partnership with Oxford Brooks University in U.K. The courses begin from February 2008.

JU DBA wins against IBA-DU

Department of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University defeated Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University by 15 runs in a friendly cricket match held on Friday, January 04, 2008 at the Gymnasium Field of DU. The two most excellent business disciplines of the country played an exciting cricket match, which was enjoyed by more than two hundred spectators. After winning the toss DBA decided to bat first and set a target of 136 in 15 overs for IBA to chase. Utshab (15th batch) scored 30 runs with two huge sixes while Razib (13th) played a perfect captains knock of 29 runs in just 17 balls. In chasing the challenging target, opener Jony (12th) gave IBA a good start, but DBA was able to restrict IBA to the score of 120 runs for the loss of nice wickets. Rakib took three wickets. DBA captain Razib was declared man of the match for his all-round performance. Many BBA students from both universities were present at the field to support their team. Before starting the match IBA cricket team arranged a launch party at IBA canteen for their guests from J.U.

University Dental College Alumni installation

The 1st installation of University Dental College (UDC) Alumni was held on 09 January in the conference room on the college premises at Moghbazar. Guests were received with warmth and a stick of flower and a souvenir bag made for the occasion. A large number of doctors who have passed out of the college since 1995 took part in the function. The slogan of the function was, “Doctors will have to come out to serve the society besides their professional work.” Among those who spoke on the occasion were Dr. Md. Wahiduzzaman, Dr. Syed Mozammel Hossain, Dr. Shamim Jubair Bithin, Dr. Md. Abdul Kader, Dr. Ahmedul Azim and Dr. Sharafat Hossain. Speakers highlighted the achievements of UDC in the past years and called upon all doctors to maintain high standard in their professional and personal life to keep the flag of UDC aloft.

East Delta University (EDU) launched in Ctg

A new private university -- East Delta University (EDU) -- is going to start its academic activities formally from the third week of current month here in the port city with a commitment to providing quality education.

“The main objective to establish EDU after nearly two-years' preparation in consultation with a group of internationally renowned scholars was derived from corporate social responsibility (CSR) to the city and people of Chittagong,” said MA Salam, chairman of the EDU's governing body, in his welcome speech at a briefing on December 31.

Salam, also the first vice president of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the true purpose behind EDU is to unleash human potential that exist in Chittagong and in Bangladesh. EDU will provide people an academic environment where they can excel and be competitive in the global economy.

“The Chittagong-people will no more require leaving their home for quality education. And we believe that very soon the EDU will be centre of Chittagong renaissance, attracting scholars and business from all over the world,” Salam hoped.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr MA Wadud Mian gave an overview of the EDU.

Located in the heart of city's ever-bubbly business hub, Agrabad Commercial Area, the EDU with its sprawling five-storied campus, modern academic facilities, spacious classrooms and Wifi Zone will start enrolling students from January 18 to January 25, and classes will formally begin from February 10, the VC said.

Dr Debasish Chakraborty, professor of economics at Central Michigan University in USA, is the chairman of a 10-member advisory board of the EDU. The other board members are: Dr Syed Giasuddin Ahmed, Dr Shahid M Shahidullah, Dr Niazru Rahim, Dr Habibul H Khondker, Dr Md Ghulam Murtaza, Dr Mokerrom Hossain, Rebecca Chakraborty, Shahid U Mahmud and Roy L De Barbieri.

RU Drama dept invites creative papers for 1st journal

The Music and Drama department of Rajshahi University(RU) has invited creative papers for its maiden research journal. Anyone can submit a paper for the journal before January 31 which will be scrutinized by experts in the related field. Planning committee of the Music and Drama department believes that the endeavour will help bolster the local tradition and generate enthusiasm for the music and drama related field.

A Korean volunteers' team visited Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on January 3. The volunteers work for building health supported houses for the poor under Habitat For Humanity, an international Non-Government Organization. The team under the banner of " Youth Builders Team" was accorded a reception at Teachers Students Center (TSC) of BAU. Vice-Chancellor of BAU Prof. Dr. Muhammed Mosharraf Hossain Miah attended the function as chief guest. Among others, Convener of Dean Council Prof. Dr. Syed Shakawat Hossain, BAU Register Md. Nazibur Rahman, Prof. Md. Rafiqul Alam, Programme Officer of Habitat for Humanity Mohammed Salim and Country Director of the organization Yuwan Suk spoke on the occasion.
