BUET students to seek results online from now on!

Muhammad Eusha

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology has taken a radical step in their effort in keeping up with the pacing world of technological development. From now on, the university will publish the students' results online. That is not the only step taken by the authority in their implementation of the modernization of the previously existing cumbersome procedure of managing academic performance records. The students would no longer have to rush from desk to desk to register for the next term. The registration process has been engineered to go online as well. In an officially issued notice, the university authority confirmed this.

According to the new procedure, each student will be given a separate username and password with which her or she will be able to access a unique account on the internet. The account pages will contain results of the previous terms of the student along with instructions for the registration of the next one. Intended appropriate courses can be chosen and the validity of the choices will be analyzed by the respective advisors later on. This method is simple and reliability is unquestionable.

The procedure has been already illustrated at http://www.buet.ac.bd/academics/reg-manual.pdf

Journey of Tourism & Hotel Management Department Begins at DU

Tourism & Hotel Management Department starts its journey under the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) of Dhaka University. On November 8th 2007, Honourable Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. SMA Faiz has appointed Professor Dr. Md. Ashraful Islam Chowdhury as the Chairman of this department. Last Saturday, I met Professor Dr. Md. Ashraful Islam Chowdhury and asked him about the department, teacher facilities, course curriculum, and specially his thoughts on this department. In 2006, Department of Marketing of DU took the initiative of starting this department under the Faculty of Business Studies. At first, the committee suggested the name of this department as Tourism & Hospitality Management. But Academic Council has approved the name of this department as Tourism & Hotel Management.

The department will interact with the students by admitting them in the 2007-08 session. It will offer BBA, MBA as well as EMBA. In BBA, the department can take 50 students to enrol in 2007-08 session. In EMBA, the department expect that they can enrol 60 students. The course curriculum is going to be as standard as that of foreign universities. The Chairman assured me that the syllabus will be set to meet the need of tourism companies and hotels and motels across the world. The Founder Chairman Professor Dr. Md. Ashraful Islam Chowdhury said, “Tourism is the fastest growing sector of the global economy, and provides jobs to millions thus contributing significantly to the national exchequer. In Bangladesh, the prospect of this sector needs not be overemphasized; but there is a lack of trained manpower in this field which hinders its growth to a great extent. The department aims at producing well qualified and trained people in this field to cater to the need of the industry. Dhaka University's endeavour in this field is the first of its kind among public universities. I personally expect generous support of the business community and entrepreneurs to develop this department to a fully grown one as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).”
