Dhaka University Management Club-Growing with Grace

Dhaka University Management Club (DUMC) is the trailblazer for enhancing the skills of the students of Department of Management Studies, University of Dhaka. Since its inception, the club has been on a mission to ensure the supremacy of the Management Students. Here is a glimpse of some of the activities undertaken by the club.

Industrial tour to RAHIMAFROOZ Battery Plant
DUMC organised an Industrial Tour to RAHIMAFROOZ Batteries Ltd on 28th April, 2008. A group of 27 students from Dept. of Management Studies, University of Dhaka took part in this tour. The visit was aimed at providing insight about the various productions processes of Battery plating and assembling. Two engineers explained each of the steps of production.

Seminar on English Skill Development
“Step forward to develop your English skill” with this theme a Seminar on English Skill Development was organized on 17th of May, 2008. Around 200 students of the Department of Management Studies attended the seminar with great enthusiasm. Samina M. Saifuddin, Associate Professor, Department of Management Studies, University of Dhaka was the key speaker. She explained some strategic issues following which students could enhance their English skill. Carola Reyes, Migratory Research Person and English Teacher from New Zealand was another speaker in the Seminar. She shared her experience about how she acquired competency in English which is not her first language.

Advance MS Excel for further excellence
A week long workshop on Advance Microsoft Excel was organised jointly with Daffodil Institute of IT from 12th May to 19th May, 2008. Around 40 students from Department of Management Studies participated in this workshop.

Workshop on CV writing and Interview board facing
A workshop on Career planning, CV writing and Interview board facing was held on 24th of May, 2008. Resource persons from Standard Chartered, GrameenPhone and Aktel were invited to conduct the workshop.

CV is the First tool to entrance
CV is being regarded as the first tool to enter any dream job. Ms. Sharmin Sultan, Manager, Resourcing, Human Resource Division, Standard Chartered Bank Ltd provided some essential guidelines in preparing an attractive CV. Being an HR professional she also shared her experience while going through thousands of CVs.

Marketing yourself
Career planning is done, CV is prepared, now its time to sell yourself in the interview board. Mr. Mohammad Shariful Islam, Deputy Manager, Resourcing & Employer Branding, Human Resource Division, Grameenphone Ltd from employers' point of view described what qualities do they look for in a candidate, how better they can be convinced, how well one can do the preparation.

Inter batch Business Case challenge
Managers need to take crucial decisions analysing the problems of the organisation.

The better the decisions, the greater the chances to succeed. With this aim in view, inter batch business case competition was launched in Department of Management Studies, University of Dhaka. The first round was held on 22nd of May. Only 14 teams out of more than 30 have made it to the second round which is scheduled to be held in July after the summer vacation.

Picture Day
DUMC observed 10th of June as the Picture Day for about 600 members. On this festive day, all the general members were invited to come in proper attire in order to catch the memorable moment in the photo frame.

The way of analyzing Business Case
A workshop on Business Case Analysis was held with a focus on giving the students an idea about how to go through a business case till presenting it. Md. Latiful Khabir, winner of Inter Department Case Competition of Dhaka University, conducted the workshop.

Debate is all about logic
DUMC organised English debate workshop on 29th May at the faculty of business studies of Dhaka University. The objective of this workshop was to create awareness about the importance of debate and its role in developing the students' intellectual faculty. Students of different batches participated in this workshop. Mr. Asad, an international debater who participated in different debate competition in USA and Malaysia, conducted the first session of English debate workshop.

Dr. Shameem Reza, faculty of Mass Media and Journalism department of Dhaka University conducted the second session of debate workshop.

Among others, Dr. Saker Ahmed, faculty of Dept. of Management Studies, Dhaka University was present in the workshop.

Guidelines of public speaking by IDEA
DUMC organised a workshop on public speaking and presentation skill on 4th June in collaboration with international debate education association (IDEA) and center for debate and public communication (CDPC).

Marchin Zaleski, director of international debate education association (IDEA) conducted the workshop.

Budget & DUMC
To raise the young voice of the country about budget, a symposium titled: Budget Analysis and Recommendation Symposium took place on June 16th, 2008 where students from different universities presented their analysis along with recommendations. The participating teams were from DU Management, BRAC, IBA and University of Liberal Arts of Bangladesh.

Mr. Shawkat Hossain Masum, Business Editor of The Daily Prothom Alo, Sheikh Shahriar, Senior Staff Correspondent, New Age, Dr. Abu Eusuf, Associate Professor, Dept. of Development Studies, University of Dhaka and Mr. Zunayed Saki, Political Activist were present in the programme as panel members. The programme was jointly organised by Dhaka University Management Club (DUMC) and Profile of Bengal.

This is not the end of the journey. The bandwagon of Dhaka University Management Club is rolling on with the promise to discover new areas and make a difference.
