“Nazrul Joyontee”at Sunshine Grammar School

Arifa Sultana

We Sunshiners celebrated the 108th birth anniversary of our rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam or Dukhu Mia with much pomp and gaiety. Kazi Nazrul Islam popularly known as the “Bidrohi Kobi”, or rebel poet, for which we Bangladeshis take much pride, was also a musician, a revolutionary and philosopher .

We worked for days, keeping ourselves busy with paints and brushes and water and everything concerned with art. We formed different groups for performing various jobs. We sketched Nazrul's Portrait , wrote poetry, and his life history. The best part was when some of us had paints on our faces and hands for others to laugh at us ! Later we hung the poet’s wonderfully decorated portraits and hung them on a long ornamented stage. The program started at 11 AM. There were recitations of Nazrul's poems by students as well as by the teachers. The life of the rebel poet was highlighted and some of his “Hamd” like Masjider o pashe amay kobor dio bhai was sung with tears rolling down the audiences’ cheeks.

The success of the day brought happiness in the hearts of the Sunshiners. Then there were prizes and gifts for the participants.
