Experiencing the trivia of personal computers
Ipshita
It has been quite some time now that computers are being widely used in Bangladesh. In fact, these days it is almost an excuse to skip work and assignments if our pc acts up. But certainly things were different back then. It was during the late 80s and the early 90s that computers were first introduced in Bangladesh. And to my great surprise I now realize that I got my first PC in 1995, just 5 years after it came to Bangladesh! Excuse me if I am over calculating the influx of computers, as this is what I am told by the computer sellers these days. I was more careful about taking care of it than using it to get my job done.
Back in those days I used to have a bunch of notorious cousins who were more interested in using my pc than meeting me or anyone for that matter. With great enthusiasm they talked which lead to one single question that is 'Can I use your pc for two minutes?' I never said no to them and just said 'be careful' but who would listen to those pleading words! Soon they would hurriedly start my pc. I sat behind them and watched closely what they did. I observed helplessly how they tortured my pc. Some of my cousins wanted to write something, some said let us listen to songs and others said lets play games and bingo. So they searched through each and every folder and couldn't find any games other than built in games. I can clearly recall those spiteful moments when they played games and spilled coke on my CPU! The great adventure began when my mom came in and raced against my cousin as they played Need for Speed. Every time it was the same story, others used my pc and I watched silently. My uncle gave me software on a tutorial for learning the functions of the keyboard. Then it was time to learn Photoshop and be technologically advanced but of course as lazy as I am, I waited till I got it done by someone else.
Looking back, I now laugh thinking how childish I used to be. Starting from office work to newspapers, pc is a must. The requirement of the day is so advanced that you can hardly get along if you don't learn how to use a computer. So I think it is about time that I learn how to expand my knowledge of working with a pc rather than using it for just programmes like Word, Excel or a potential music board.
