International Day for Eradication of Poverty 2008

CAMPE (Campaign for Popular Education) organized a Road Show, comprising of a musical program and a signature campaign, on 18 October in Dhaka on the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty-2008. It started from the TSC, Dhaka University at 10.30 am. As a part of a three-day long program planned by GCAP (Global Call to Action against Poverty), the Road Show featured four of the country's eminent artistes- Azam Khan, Shahed, Fahmida Nabi and Sumon (Arthohin), rendering music at four different spots (Dhaka University, Gulshan 1, in front of National Parliament and Dhanmondi Rabindra Sorobar). Hundreds of people including rickshaw pullers, 'tokais,' students and people of different professions joined with their voice and participated in the signature campaign.

Aiesec, BRAC University, organizes Club Fair

Oikos Dhaka, the Bangladeshi Chapter of Oikos International - a platform for students of sustainable economics and management, is one of the three internationally affiliated clubs/organizations in BRAC University. Oikos's member recruitment met with a huge response as more than 50 new members signed up for the club during the fair.

Excursion of EEE 05,CUET

Students of 05 batch, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) of CUET organised a day-long excursion recently. On that day the students visited GEM Company, Eastern Cables Ltd. and Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd. The excursion provided the students with a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience. Lecturers of CUET - Mr. A.S.M Sayem, Mr. Sana Ullah and Mr Faruque Uz Zaman accompanied the students in the excursion.

AIUB Launches Program for BCB

The American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), in accordance with a recent MoU with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), launched its English Language and Basic Computer courses on 16 October 2008. According to the MoU, AIUB will provide English, computer and leadership training to the BCB officials, as well as to the national cricket team players, under-19 and under-17 cricketers, women's national cricket team players and coaches of different BCB teams.

The brief and lively inauguration ceremony was held at the English Language Laboratory of AIUB where Head of English department Dr. Faheem Hasan Shahed welcomed all the participants. Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Tafazzal Hossain, Dean of Arts Dr. Charles Villanueva, Associate Dean of Arts Dr. Tajul Islam, Coordinator of Sports & Assistant Professor of Business Admininstration, Mr. Abdul K. Nazmul delivered goodwill speeches and hoped for the successful functioning of both the courses that will genuinely benefit BCB players and officials in their professional domains. The BCB officials also assured of extending their cooperation in this regard.

AIUB is conducting such a unique event as part of its ongoing community service. Previously, AIUB organized similar programs for Bangladesh Police and RAB officials.

Shishu Shurokkha Andolon Launched

Child Protection Movement (Shishu Shurokkha Andolon), a group of more than 135 children organizations, was launched on16 October, 2008 - on the second day of 'National Child Rights Week' being observed by 'Save the Children Sweden-Denmark' (SCSD) and associate organizations. The event took place at Ramna Restaurant Complex, Ramna Park in the Capital. A cultural program and a fun fair was organized on the occasion.

Eminent Artist and cultural personality Mustafa Monowar formally inaugurated the launching of the first of such programs committed towards establishing children’s security and fulfillment of child rights. Mr. Niels Bentzen Pedersen, Country Representative SCSD, along with Deputy Country Director Obaidur Rahman; Muslema Bari, Executive Director, CPD; Salma Ali, Executive Director, BNWLA; Imranul Huq Choudhury, Executive Director, UDDIPAN; and Child representative Popy was present. A number of 40 Children Clubs of 21 organizations associated with SCSD, along with other children organizations such as Eachchey Media, Child Brigade, Bhorer Alo, N C T F, BILLS, AUPORAJEO BANGLADESH, are united under the organization. The organizations are dedicated to building public opinion through observation and taking up measures against child repression and torture.

HOPES Scholarship awarding ceremony Held at SAU

Scholarship Award ceremony of Helping Organization for Promising and Energetic Students (HOPES) was held on 25 October at the Conference Hall of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka.

HOPES, a voluntary organization extends financial support to the poor and meritorious students of rural Bangladesh who are studying in different Public Universities and higher educational institutions in disciplines of engineering, architecture, medical, agricultural, social and natural sciences. According to Hopes President Professor Dr. Nur Mohammad Talukder of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and General Secretary Professor Dr. Md. Afzal Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology(HSTU) Dinajpur, this year 100 meritorious students were awarded Hopes Scholarship selected from Universities of Agricultural, Engineering, Medical, Social and Natural Sciences of Bangladesh.

ULAB holds Freshers' Orientation

Continuing its mission of Active Learning for its students, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held a unique Freshers orientation program on Sunday, 18 October 2008.

Students were broken into small groups, each one led by two faculty members and two senior students. These groups did activities designed to break the ice between all the participants, including students and the faculty. Issues of identity and leadership were explored, while ULAB's mission and values were imparted in an active and enjoyable way.

The faculty themselves had to undergo training to understand the human dynamics involved in the activities. Mustafiz ur Raman Shahin, ULAB's Trainer for Physical Movement and Choreography, conducted the training session.

The response from the faculty and students was tremendous. Many expressed surprise and delight at the unique learning activity.
