NSU holds annual Club Carnival 2009

NORTH South University (NSU) student clubs organized the Annual Club Carnival 2009 on 8 August at the NSU Bashundhara campus. The chairman of NSU Foundation Mr. M.A. Kashem inaugurated the event. NSU Vice Chancellor Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. SAM Khairul Bashar, Dean and Club Coordinator Dr. Selim Sarwar spoke on the occasion. Academic and Administrative heads, Faculty members, Clubs members and students attended the event. Mr. M.A. Kashem, while inaugurating the Annual Club Carnival-2009, called for the need to exert 'Student-Leadership' through these Club-activities. Assuring all-out support to these extra-curricular activities of the clubs, Mr. M.A. Kashem encouraged the students for more proactive roles in order to nurture their leadership, as amply displayed by the clubs. Dr. Siddiqi, reminded the students that Education is 'Holistic' and not limited to class-rooms alone, rather complimented by extra-curricular activities such as those demonstrated by the Clubs.

 

Economics Fresher`s 2009 at DU

The Department of Economics, University of Dhaka, put up a splendid showcase of entertainment on August 8, 2009 in the TSC Central auditorium of the campus to welcome the 88th batch fresher's and bid farewell to the 83rd batch currently enrolled in MSS courses. Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof.AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the session. Emeritus Prof Dr Sirajul Islam Chowdhury of the Department of English addressed the function as special guest while chairman of the Economics Department Prof. Dr Abul Barakat presided over it. Prominent faculties talked about different aspects of the department. It was also announced that the department is going to host the 6th South Asian Students Economic Meet (SAESM) this year. A captivating debate also took place on the proposition “Students are the heart of the campus,” where the students had to argue against the faculties of the department. The programme also featured numerous performances on the part of both the students and members of the faculty. The event was concluded with a concert by the popular band Artcell.

 

Heriot-Watt University rolls on

THE launching ceremony of Heriot-Watt University, UK BBA programme, was held on 07 August at the British Council Auditorium in the presence of the parents and guardians of the fresher students. Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman of the University Grants Commission(UGC) was present as chief guest. Other distinguished guests were Mr. Marc A. Quinn, Director of External Programmes, School of Management and Languages, Heriot Watt University, UK; Mr. Vivek Govil, President, Pearson Education, South Asia; Dr. Wali Tasar Uddin, MBE JP, Honourary Consul-General of Bangladesh in Scotland; Mr. Peter Ashton, Director Examinations, British Council, Bangladesh; Brigadiar General Enayet Hussain, PSC, (Rtd.), Chairman, BiMS; and Mr. Saidur Rahman, Country Manager, Edexcel, Bangladesh. It is noted that Heriot-Watt University recently achieved the 22nd spot in the overall Guardian University league tables. In Bangladesh, BiMS (Bangladesh Institute of Management Studies) has been selected as an Approved Learning Partner(ALP) in April 2009.

 

ISME Farewell and Orientation 2009

IUBAT Society for Mechanical Engineering (ISME) bade farewell to the graduating students with crests and received freshmen with flowers through a Farewell and Orientation Program organized at the IUBAT premise on August 8, 2009. The program was attended by the Vice-Chancellor; interdepartmental faculty and staff members and the students of the university. The program was followed by a cultural gala and constitution of different committees of ISME for 2009-2010. Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor and Founder of IUBAT in his speech upheld the role of such societies in the areas of mechanics, energy and heat, mathematics, engineering sciences, design and manufacturing. The technological and industrial innovations contribute to the progress of the economy of the country. He also praised the role of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in producing skilled mechanical engineers to contribute to the human resource development mission of IUBAT. Engr Abdul Wadood, Coordinator of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, stated that the contemporary industrialization throughout the globe is the contribution of Mechanical Engineers. Echoing the Vice-Chancellor and Program Coordinator, ISME incoming President called upon every one of the graduating and freshmen students to work hard for the cause of realization of IUBAT's mission to bring positive changes in Bangladesh through engineering renovation.

 

Seminar at Southeast University

THE Department of Textile Engineering, Southeast University recently arranged a seminar on the occasion of "International Year of Natural Fibres 2009 and World Environment Day." The Hon'ble Minister for Social Welfare of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Enamul Hoque Mostafa Shaheed, MP, was the chief guest in the event, while the President of Bangladesh Knitwear Mnaufacturing and Export Association (BKMEA) Mr. Fazlul Hoque attended as the special guest. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of Southeast University Prof. ANM Meshquat Uddin was present as the Guest of Honor. Prof. M. Shamsher Ali, Vice Chancellor of Southeast University presided over the meeting. Speakers at the meeting expressed their hope for the revival of the golden days of Jute.

 

IUB and UNAIDS sign MoU

THE Centre for Health, Population and Development (CHPD) at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with UNAIDS on 16 August, 2009 at the Spectra Convention Center, Gulshan, Dhaka. Professor Omar Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IUB and Director of CHPD principally signed the MOU on behalf of IUB. On behalf of UNAIDS the principal signatory was Mr. Dan Odallo, UNAIDS country director. Additional signatories on behalf of IUB were Prof. Bazlul Mobin Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of IUB and on behalf of UNAIDS Dr. Munir Ahmed, Social Mobilization Advisor at UNAIDS. The principal objectives of the MOU are that IUB will be an official partner of UNAIDS in promoting (a) Research (b) National Capacity Building and (c) Information sharing in the field of HIV and AIDS in Bangladesh. In this regard it may be mentioned that IUB has already conducted several desk reviews and operations research projects in the field of HIV/AIDS in collaboration with UNAIDS. The chief guest of the MOU signing ceremony was Dr. Deena Huq, Director General, Prime Minister's Office. The MoU signing ceremony was followed by a short farewell to Mr. Dan Odallo, UNAIDS Country Director Bangladesh.

 

15 August in BRACU

THE death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed by the students, teachers and staff of BRAC University on 15 August. Professor Syed Hashemi, Director of BRAC Development Institute, touched on the history of Independence of Bangladesh and the role of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Vice Chancellor Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury also spoke on the occasion and analyzed the famous 7 March speech by Bangabandhu. The speeches were followed by a performance by famous singer Sadi Mohammad.

The Students of BRAC University also arranged an a art competition for the children of Korail Slum on the occasion.

 

The UAP Arranges Reception for Merit Scholars

ON 30 July 09, the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) arranged a reception in the Campus to honour and recognize the Merit Scholars of Spring 09 semester. Although the University had been generously giving out scholarships and special waivers to the deserving students since its inception in 1996, this was for the first time that a formal reception was arranged for the scholars. Noted industrialist and entrepreneur AA Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the UAP Foundation was the Chief Guest while Prof. A Matin Patwari, Vice Chancellor of the UAP, chaired the function. AA Moniruzzaman announced a personal donation of Taka five lac towards instituting a scholarship for poor but meritorious students of the UAP. Former Secretary and Ambassador AKM Kamaluddin Choudhury, a member of the UAP Foundation, also addressed the gathering. More than 500 students were awarded merit scholarships in Spring 09 semester. This was in addition to 370 students who were given entry level scholarships based on the results obtained in their SSC and HSC examination and another few hundreds who were given Special financial waivers by the Vice Chancellor.

 

Visual and Digital Masks Exhibit at ULAB

THE Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), launched an exhibit entitled "Faces, Masks and Identity of Bangladesh's New Generation" on 18 August. The exhibit featured five music videos, 17 face paintings, 30 plaster masks and 54 digital masks produced by students from the courses "Multimedia Production," "Visual Communication," "Video Communication" and "Social Context of Media." The exhibit is part of the Department's Curriculum Integration Program, which was established to facilitate faculty and students from various year levels and study concentrations to work together and learn from each other. The exhibit theme highlighted the Face Negotiation Theory of Communication Scholar Stella Ting-Tonnmey.
