CMC Intra University Marketing Quiz Competition'09

East West University Creative Marketing Club (EWUCMC) recently organised the “CMC Intra-University Marketing Quiz Competition”, with the final round held on 17 December. The participants were divided into two groups- one for final year students (Group 'A') while the other for second and third year students (Group 'B'). Ahmed Imtiaz Shihab became the champion from the seniors' group (group A), while it was Farha Diba from the juniors' group (group B). Club moderators Md. Farhan Faruqui and Md. Anamul Hoque Rubai presented each of the champions with a crest while the other finalists were awarded with a certificate.

The objective of this competition was to provide the students of EWU the opportunity to verify their depth of knowledge on marketing. Another objective was to select the best candidates for the Inter-university Marketing Quiz Competition that the club is planning to arrange in the next semester.

 


Conference at MMC

Aminul Islam

Medicine Clubs of different medical colleges of the country held a two-day long central conference at the auditorium of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) on December 17 and December 18. It was the 12th central conference of Medicine Clubs. Some 300 members of Medicine Clubs from nine medical colleges of the country took part in the programmes. The programme also included cultural events and colourful rally.

The conference was themed as 'Learn thyself and help to teach others to ensure health services to the humanity'. Principal Motiur Rahman, MP inaugurated the conference. The president of Medicine Club central unit Dr. Mohammd Nafis Alam presided the inaugural session. Joint-secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) central unit Dr. MA Aziz, principal of MMC Prof. Mirza Hamidul Haque, president and secretary of BMA local unit Dr. AFM Rafiqul Alam and Dr. Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan, secretary of Medicine Club central unit Md. Zobaer Al Hasan, convener and member secretary of the conference organizing committee Md. Fakrul Hasan Shanta and Abed-ar-Rahman were also present at the inaugural session.

 

ULAB Launches Photography and Digital Art Exhibit

The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) launched an exhibit titled “Love You Hate You: Family Dialectics in Contemporary Bangladesh” on 21 December. The exhibit featured one music video, 30 digital artworks, 30 photographs, and 4 communication campaigns produced by students from the courses “Multimedia Production,” “Photography,” “Video Communication,” “Development Communication” and “Social Context of Media.”

The exhibit is part of the Department's Curriculum Integration Program, which was established to facilitate faculty and students from various year levels and study concentrations to work together and learn from each other. The exhibit theme is based on the communication concept of Relational Dialectics, proposed by Leslie Baxter and Barbara Montgomery, which highlights the tensions and struggles of close personal ties. One special feature of the exhibit is the communication campaign on children's rights, which was developed for Save the Children Australia. Sixteen students enrolled in the course “Development Communication and Advocacy” facilitated by ULAB Faculty Marium Akther will present their public awareness plans together with prototypes of communication materials (such as posters, brochures, pamphlets, etc.). The exhibit will run until January 16.

 

Victory Day observed at RU

Rajshahi University observed Victory Day with much enthusiasm. The national flag was hoisted atop the administrative building, central library, VC's lounge and all residential dormitories to mark the day. The Victory Day's programme at Rajshahi University (RU) campus began with the placing of wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar by the university Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan at 7 am. RU Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Nurullah, teachers and high officials of the university were also present. Rajshahi University Teachers' Association (RUTA), cultural and political organizations and hall authorities also placed wreathes at the Shaheed Minar.

RUTA and PTS (Progressive Teachers Society) brought out processions on the campus and held discussions on the occasion. Shaheed Smiriti Shangrahasala organised an art competition and patriotic songs competition at the Shaheed Minar premises on the occasion. A charity cricket match was also held between teachers and officers at university stadium to mark the day. Several cultural organisations also held cultural programme including patriotic songs, street drama, poem recitation and mass songs at different point of the campus.

 

Discussion on “Being Bengali: At Home and in the World” at BU

A discussion titled “Being Bengali: At Home and in the World” was held at the BRAC University (BU) on 14 December. The Department of English and Humanities of BRAC University and Writing and Society Research Group of the University of Western Sydney jointly organised the discussion commemorating the Victory Day and Martyred Intellectuals Day. Attended by a wide range of scholars representing three generations, the discussion looked at historical and cultural aspects of what constitutes the Bengali, as well as the new influences at work in the shaping of this identity.

The discussion also looked at the new diasporic Bengalis, and how class and regional issues affect the lives of Bengalis living outside the borders of the two Bengals. The discussion was led by Dr. Mridula Nath Chakraborti from the University of Western Sydney. The three sessions were introduced by Professor Perween Hasan of the Department of Islamic History and Culture, Professor David Ludden of the Department of History of New York University, and Asif Saleh, Executive Director of Drishtipat. The session was graced by the presence of cultural personalities, academics and young researchers.

 

Accounting Quiz Award-2009 at Southern University

Southern University Bangladesh organised “Accounting Quiz Award-2009” recently at its auditorium hall. Some 130 students of the Department of Business Administration participated in the contest. The competition was divided into five different phases, i.e. selection round, knowledge round, application round, advanced round and final round. SUB Vice-Chancellor Prof. A.J.M. Nuruddin Chowdhury inaugurated the event while Suranjit Dhar, GM, Accounts & Finance, Sanmar Properties Limited, was present as the special guest. Amongst others, Sarwar Jahan, Founder & Treasurer of SUB, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Sharifuzzaman, and Ishrat Jahan, Head, General Education, were present. Bablu Kumar Dhar, Lecturer, Faculty of Business Administration, was in-charge of the overall supervision of the event.

 

 

1st International Conference on Developments in Renewable Energy Technology (ICDRET'09)

The 1st International Conference on the developments in Renewable Energy Technology (ICDRET-09), a three-day long programme, was organized by United International University (UIU) at the university campus from 17-19 December. This was the first international conference on Renewable Energy Technology ever arranged by a private university in Bangladesh. The inaugural ceremony of the conference held at 3.00 pm on 17 December. Prof. Nazrul Islam, Chairman-Bangladesh University Grants Commission was present in the occasion as chief guest. UIU Vice Chancellor Prof. M. Rezwan Khan presided over the programme.

In total, 63 papers were selected for presentation in different technical sessions authored by delegates from 14 different European and South Asian countries. The programme was arranged in 13 technical sessions. Other than technical sessions, five plenary sessions were also held, where key note papers on renewable energy were presented by renowned researchers working in this field. In this conference, researchers in the field of renewable energy got the opportunity to exchange ideas on the recent trend in the renewable energy technology and utilization of renewable energy towards economic development of the world. The conference was sponsored by German Technical Assistance (GTZ). IEEE-PES (Power & Energy Society) was the technical co-sponsor of the event. Other co-sponsors were Kyocera Asia Pacific Ltd, Hamko Corporation Ltd, Infrastructure Development Co. Ltd ( IDCOL), Rahim Afrooz Renewable Energy Ltd., Rimso Battery & Co, Panna Group (PBL), Energy Pac Electronics Ltd, and Navana Renewable Energy Ltd.

 


Martyred Intellectuals Day observed at Kazi Nazrul Islam University

Marking the Martyred Intellectuals Day, the authority and the students of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Trishal chalked out a day long programme at the university campus recently.

The day long programmes included a mourning procession, placing of floral wreaths at the university shaheed minar and a discussion meeting. Vice-Chancellor of JKKNIU Prof. Syed Giasuddin Ahmed led the procession that paraded the campus. Later, a discussion was held with Dr. Subrata Kumar Dey in the chair.

Among others university Proctor and Dean of Arts Faculty Prof. AKM Shamsuddin Chowdhury, Provost Prof. Rasidunnabi, treasurer Md. Aynal Islam, Register Md. Aminul Islam, Chairmen of BBA, Computer Science and Engineering, Economics and English Departments Dr. Subrata Kumar Dey, Prof. AHM Kamal, Prof. Rehnuma Ferdous and Prof. Dr. Md. Emdadul Huda respectively addressed the discussion.

 

Maple Leaf student awarded

Moinuddin Rahman Shahbaz, a student of Maple Leaf International School, Dhaka, was recently awarded a certificate for obtaining 100 per cent marks at Movers, a Young Learners' English test conducted by the University of Cambridge, UK.

The award was presented by Matthew Knowles, Programme Development Manager, British Council Dhaka and Zeba Ali, Principal, Maple Leaf International School.
