Seminar on Anti Drug at Bangladesh University

NO TO DRUG, YES TO HAPPY LIFE -With this motto a seminar was held on August 7 at the Bangladesh University Auditorium. The seminar was organised by the Department of Business Administration. Prof. Md. Golam Ali Fakir, VC, was the chief guest. Prof. DR. Ahsanul Huq, Vice Chancellor, People's University was present as special guest. Among others, Prof. Dr. Rowshon Kamal, Head of Business Administration Department, Mr. Mustafa Kamaluddin, Head of English Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Anwarul Islam of Pharmacy Department and Registrar, Lt. Col. (Retd.) Md. Abul Kashem, also participated in the seminar.

Speakers highlighted the deadly effects of drugs and made fervent appeal to the young generation to resist drug abuse. The event ended with a captivating cultural function where renowned artistes and students showcased their talents.


Kindergarten kids accorded reception in Pabna

'Kindergarten Association', Pabna accorded a reception and awarded 430 children from Pabna, Natore and Sirajganj districts for their exceptional results. The association also awarded 5 gold medals to five children for their outstanding performance. A reception programme was held in Abdus Sattar Auditorium in Pabna Edward College on August 7.

Pabna Deputy Commissioner, Dr. AFM Monjur Kadir chaired the programme while the Secretary of Housing and Establishment ministry Dr. Khandaker Shawkat Hossain spoke as the chief guest.

Among others Principal of Government Edward College, Pabna, Professor Md. Habibullah Miah, Vice Principal of Pabna Women’s College, Professor Md. Shafikul Islam and the president of Pabna Kindergarten association Fazle Karim Murad spoke on the occasion.


National Mourning Day programme at ULAB

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (Satmasjid Road, Dhaka) organised a seminar, film show and a book launching ceremony to mark the National Mourning Day-2010 in Campus A- Auditorium on August 11and 12. A short documentary 'Mrittuhin Pran' produced by Kazi Abu Jafar Siddiki was screened and `Ekti Mohakabber Sesh Oddhay' a collection of essays written by ULAB faculty Prof. Abdul Mannan on the Father of the Nation was launched. The Program was attended by Kazi Shahed Ahmed, President, BOG, ULAB, Professor Rafiqul Islam, VC, ULAB and Kazi Abu Jafor Siddiki, DG, Bangladesh Television.


UIU Entrepreneurship Forum

ON August 3, United International University Entrepreneurship Forum (UIUEF), the business forum of United International University (UIU) organised a seminar titled “The Entrepreneurial Mindset” in the UIU auditorium, Dhanmondi. Mr. Thom Rohe, Director of Entrepreneurship of Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, USA, was the speaker of the seminar. The seminar was also attended by Syed Shahnawaz Mohsin, Deputy Information Specialist of Public Affairs, Information Section, US Embassy, Dhaka; Prof. Dr. Mohammad Musa Ph.D, Professor, school of Business; Prof. Dr. Hasnan Ahmed, Professor of Account and Director of School of Business; Mohammad Ahshanullah, Assistant Professor of UIU and Advisor of UIU Entrepreneurship Forum. The primary objective of this seminar was to encourage students in ways to become a successful entrepreneur, and at the same time contribute to their community.

Mr. Kauffman, the founder of Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, USA, was present as well who set the example of successful entrepreneurship. He worked hard with his sound entrepreneurial knowledge, and today he is worth four billion dollars. He talked about the mindset of an entrepreneur. First, one should make a choice and seek for opportunities. Successful entrepreneurs see the world differently and that's how they grab an opportunity. Successful entrepreneurs push themselves to come out of their comfort zones and use their resources wisely, including their time.

After the speech from the speaker the session was followed by a brief question and answer session.


 

Seminar on budget at Stamford University

ON 29 July the Department of Economics of Stamford University Bangladesh arranged a seminar titled `The Influence of Budget on various sectors from the perspective of Economy'. Renowned Economist and Chairman, Dept. Of Economics, Stamford University Prof. Dr. A.T.M Zahurul Huq was present in the seminar as chief guest. Besides, UN officer Dr. Sakhawat Khan, former Professor of Dhaka College, Monowara Sohul, Prof. of Echamoti Degree College Prof. Idris Ali and Prof. Afroza Begum from Dr. Maleka University College were also present as distinguished guests.

In the seminar, the influence of Budget on various sectors was discussed by the teachers and students of Economics Department. Among the students Chowdhury Mohammad Rashed discussed the agriculture sector, Minhaz Mohaimin Reza talked about the education sector, Nozifa Rahman about the rural economy, Arifur Rahman about the annual development program, Arfan-uz-zaman about skill and power and Mousumi Tripura discussed the industrialization sector. Madiha Khan presented an article on budget on behalf of the teachers.

The seminar ended with the spontaneous question and answer session of the teachers and students.

Debate festival held at JU

“Let's weave the song of freedom with the stream of debate”with this slogan a two-day debate festival was held in Jahangirnagar University (JU) on August 8 and 9 organised by Public Administration Debating Club (PADC).

The festival included installation of PADC executive body, public speaking, fun and ordinary debate, reception and a grand prize giving ceremony. Professor Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir, Vice Chancellor of JU addressed the prize giving and concluding ceremony as the chief guest while Chairman of the department, Professor Dr M Abul Kashem Mozumder presided over the function. Professor Sazed Ashraf Karim, Dean of Social Science, Mobin Uddin, Managing Director of Green heritage Properties Ltd, Ahmed Reja of English department among others spoke at the function.

Besides, the festival installed the executive body of the club for the year 2010-11.


AIUB signs CISCO IT Essentials Training Programme Agreement with BCC

BANGLADESH Computer Council (BCC), a wing of Ministry of Science and ICT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB) for the training of Cisco IT Essentials Curriculum run under the hood of Cisco Networking Academy. Mr. Mahfuzur Rahman, Executive Director, BCC and Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna, Vice-Chancellor, AIUB signed on behalf of their organization. The ceremony was held in the kind presence of Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Science and ICT, Architect Yafeash Osman. Among others Mr. Munir Hasan, Senior Consultant, Ministry of Science and ICT (MoICT), Mr. Lutfar Rahman, Director, Public Relations, AIUB, Mr. Sarker Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Director (Training), BCC, Md. Manirul Islam, Deputy Director, Continuing Education Center, AIUB and Cisco Quality Assurance Specialist for Bangladesh (QASS-BD), Ms Nazia Ahmed, UNV National ICT Specialist were also present at the ceremony held at the BCC Auditorium in the morning.

Under the MoU, AIUB will provide IT Essentials Instructor Training to BCC trainers who will eventually teach their students throughout the country. While speaking on the occasion, Honorable Minister stressed the need of highly-trained, technology-literate knowledge workers to materialize the dream of 'Digital Bangladesh and Vision 2021 set by the Govt.'. He also highlighted different initiatives taken by the Government to bridge digital divide and contribute to national development goals.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna said, "We are pleased to have partnered with BCC and heartily welcome on our common mission of developing world-class skilled human resources. Going forward, we plan to expand the outreach to include more organizations in our endeavor to take IT and networking education to students across Bangladesh and provide them yet another avenue for technical and professional excellence". Mr. Mahfuzur Rahman also expressed the same view and said, "In today's Networked Economy, skills need to be transferable across borders to meet market demands and BCC will continually support local initiatives aimed at enhancing employability for students in the IT domain".

 


International Seminar at University of UITS

On August 4 a seminar titled “Global Issues in Social Welfare” was held at the University of Information Technology & Sciences (UITS), Dhaka. This was a joint collaboration between UITS, Bangladesh and Winona State University of the US. The seminar was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of UITS, Professor M. A. Aziz. He welcomed the speakers from the two countries and inaugurated the seminar. The Chairman of the PHP Group, Alhaj Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of UITS was present as the Chief Guest. Ambassador (Retd.) Nasima Haider, the Head of the English Department and Director, Foreign Relations was also present at the seminar.

The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Robert Jay Palmer, Assistant Professor and Director of Field Education - (2007-2010) Winona State University- Department of Social Welfare. Dr. Palmer focused on the emerging globalization of Social Work and strategies for developing culturally sensitive standards of global social welfare. The other distinguished speakers at the seminar were Mr. Akhil Chandra Bhowmik and Dr. Cathleen Jo Faruque. Mr. Akhil Chandra Bhowmik is the Member Secretary of the Central Governing Body of the Vivekananda Shikhsha O Sangskriti Parishad, Bangladesh (VSSP). He is also the General Manager of Asiatic Laboratories Ltd. VSSP is a volunteer organisation working to alleviate poverty in Bangladesh. Dr. Cathleen Jo has been teaching since 1997 and is currently a professor and the Chair of the Social Welfare Programme of Winona State University. She said that the Social Work profession has a history incorporated in western American values. However, she stressed, with globalization an integral part of the professional world, it is imperative for educators to prepare students of social welfare to work in a global context.
