11 th Human Rights Summer School
Empowerment through law of the common people (ELCOP) organised 11 th Human Rights Summer School (HRSS) on December 14-26 at Proshika HRDC, Koitta, Manikganj. The theme of this year was 'Human Rights and Sovereignty over Natural Resources'.
 In the opening ceremony, Professor Dr. M. Shah Alam, Chairman, Law Commission, Bangladesh was the guest of honor. The programme also saw Dr. Kamal Hossain, noted constitutional Jurist of Bangladesh and Rabab Fatima, Regional Representative for South Asia- IOM as special guests and it was presided over by Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Other notables were Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula, Executive Director, Kathmandu School of Law (KSL), Nepal; Professor Dr. M Rafiqul Islam, Macquarie University, Australia; Dr. Rahmat Ullah, Executive Director, Elcop.
Around 48 participants of 13 Law schools from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Iran attended this intensive training programme. The course addressed a wide variety of issues ranging from constitutional to international aspects of the human rights regime. It focused on law, justice, legal education, natural resource management in the Wetland-Bangladesh perspective, problem of delimitation of Bangladesh's Maritime boundary, socio-economic rights, rights of the minorities, indigenous communities, right to self determination, international humanitarian law, refugee issue, migration, human trafficking, sustainable development and social justice etc.
The valedictory session of the 11 th HRSS saw the presence of Professor A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddique, VC, DU and Professor Mustafizur Rahman, VC, Peoples' University as special guest. The programme was presided over by Justice Md. Golam Rabbani, Chairman, Elcop. Md. Sazzatur Rahman (CU) and Mohammad Rubaiyat Rahman (DU) achieved the Dr. Z.I. Chowdhury award for the best academic performance. Anil Kumar Shrestha from Kathmandu School of Law (KSL), Nepal received the award of Best fellowship; Mabrook Mohammed (DU) and Sumit Kumar Jaiswal (KIIT Law School) India, won the award of Best Mooter.
Celebrating Victory Day
ATISH Dipankar University of Science and Technology celebrated victory day on December 16, 2010. Teachers, professors, students and employees of the university got together at 10 am in the morning and started the day with a rally. This was followed by a cultural show organised by the students. The programme was led by Dr Kabir Hossain Talukdar and the chief guest of the event was Dr Anwara Begum, the Vice Chancellor of the university. The programme also had the following professors in various discussions and talks held on campus Dr SM Mustafa Al Mamun, Nurul Karim Nasim, the Head of the English Department, Saiful Alam, the chairperson of the Science Department, Mohammad Sirajul Islam, the chairperson of Agri-business Department and other employees and students were also present.
Conference on Food Security in Bangladesh
 A two day conference titled 'Food Security in Bangladesh: Challenges for Agricultural Extension Service' concluded on December 24 at TSC Conference Hall of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).
It was organised by Bangladesh Agricultural Extension Society (BAES), the inaugural session of the seminar was addressed by BAU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar Mandal as chief guest. Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzul Haque, President of BAES presided over the function.
Md. Sayeed Ali, Director General, Dept. of Agricultural Extension was present at the seminar as special guest.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Sattar Mandal said that food security issue provides opportunities for the stakeholders of agricultural extension services in Bangladesh to strengthen their programs towards food security and poverty alleviation.
Dr. Mandal also said that 'Extension workers' should work together to establish a combination of education research and extension to achieve food security in the country.
Among others, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Momen Miah, Convener, conference organising committee, Professor Dr. Md. Hammadur Rahman and Dr. Md. Golam Farouque spoke on the occasion.
Inter-University Mathematics Olympiad
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of North South University (NSU) in collaboration with Bangladesh Mathematical Society (BMS) hosted Inter-University Mathematics Olympiad (IUMO) 2010 on December 30. More than 250 undergraduate students from different universities of Bangladesh took part in the event of Mathematics Olympiad.
A daylong programme including Olympiad Examination, Mobile SMS-Chain Quiz Competition, seminar etc was held. North South University authority sponsored the event.
Azim Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, Board of Trustee, NSU was present as the chief guest and distributed certificate and crests to the winners while Prof. A.F.M Khodadad Khan, Professor of Mathematics, University of Dhaka was present as the special guest. Prof. Dr. Hafiz G A Siddiqi presided over the function. Among others Dr. SAM Khairul Basar, Pro VC, Senior faculty members and officials were present.
Shariar Rouf from BUET stood 1st while Forsad Al Hossain and Mahbubul Hasan from same university stood 2nd position and 3rd position.
A Voting Campaign for Sundharban at SUST
 To establish the Sundarban, the largest Mangrove forest in the world and as one of the 7 wonders of the world a campaign was held on December 30, 2010 in front of E-building in the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet.
Prof. Dr. Nazia Chowdhury, Dept. of Physics as well as Provost of Ladies Hall inaugurated the campaign of voting for Sundarban where about 700 people voted. “This is the attempt to establish the tradition of Sundarban as well as the dignity of Bangladesh.” said KM Khaleduzzaman Nayan, former president of SUST Science Arena.
