Brainstorming Ideas

With a view of putting creative and fresh minds to the challenges of innovative business ideas, a business case-solving contest took place in the port city of Chittagong on February 4, 2011. The Daily Star- Banglalion- Drishty Brainstorming Contest, 2011 had young students from schools, colleges and universities joining the battle of creativity with remarkable spontaneity and enthusiasm. The programme was arranged in cooperation with the Chittagong Stock Exchange. This was the second time that Drishty Chittagong, a leading cultural and extra-curricular based organisation, arranged the programme in the port city.

The opening ceremony took place at the Regional Public Administration Training Centre Auditorium in Chittagong. The former governor of the Lions' Club, Nader Khan, was the chief guest. The ceremony was chaired by Drishty Chittagong president, Masud Bokul. Drishty General Secretary, Saif Chowdhury and Joint Secretary, Adnan Mannan also spoke at the inaugural session. The Daily Star Chittagong bureau in-charge AKM Raisul Haq Bahar, Roshangir Baccu of Bank Asia, Ameer Ali Chowdhury of Lion and Jahedul Karim of Banglalion were the special guests. A workshop was held after the inaugural ceremony where experts of different sectors of business and branding took special classes.

On the second day, the first and second rounds for the school level took place at the Theater Institute Chittagong. Nine teams from the schools, Cider International School, Presidency International School, Sunshine Grammar School, Ideal School, Silver Bells Girls High School, BAWA School, Agrabad Balika Biddyaloy and Collegiate School, participated in this round. The school teams presented marketing and branding techniques for different products. Each team gave in their best and after an excellent attempt, BAWA School and Presidency International School reached the finale.

On the third day, twenty five teams from eight universities participated in the university category primary round. The universities were Chittagong University, Premier University, East Delta University, Independent University, USTC, International Islamic University Chittagong, Southern University, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology and Asian Women University.

The teams were involved in re-branding products that have lost its appeal among its consumers. The participants sketched out practical analysis, surveys and researches on the products. After completion of several challenging phases, East Delta University and Independent University Bangladesh achieved their respective licenses to the final round.

The grand finale of The Daily Star-Banglalion Brainstorming 2011 was held at the Saint Martin Hotel, Agrabad. In this great battle, Presidency International School emerged as the champions upon beating BAWA School. Presidency International School presented a demonstration on “Reusing of Pens” while Bangladesh Mahila Samiti Balika Bidyaloy prepared a demonstration on “Reusing Water Hyacinths.”

At the university level, East Delta University won, promoting Khuab-er-mangsha (special kind of beef), a traditional food item of Chittagong, beating Independent University, Bangladesh who promoted bela biscuit, a special kind of biscuit famous in the port city.

Eminent Banker, Mamun Rashid was present as the chief guest at the award giving ceremony and distributed the prizes among the champions and runner-ups. The programme was chaired by Forid Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Advisor, Drishty Chittagong. Guests of Honour were Nasiruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Outgoing President, Chittagong Stock Exchange and Tazin Alam, Head of Cooperation, Banglalion. The sponsor of the contest was Banglalion and media partner was The Daily Star.
