BRAC University Launches Online Creative Writing Journal

The Department of English and Humanities of BRAC University launched 'Resonance,' its first online creative writing journal, on Sunday the April 10, 2011.

The production of the student-run publication was mentored by Tarfia Faizullah, noted Poet, who had previously conducted workshops on poetry and fiction writing at BRAC University. The biannual journal, 'Resonance' aims to encourage the students of the University to exercise their literary talent.

Manzu Islam, Author of 'Songs of our Swampland,' was present as chief guest at the launching ceremony. The writer shared his experiences and read excerpts from his novel. In addition, poetry recitations by Tarfia Faizullah and readings by the student contributors of the journal were included. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ain-un Nishat, and Chairperson of the English and Humanities Department, Professor Firdous Azim, also spoke at the event.


Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicist at Gono Bishwabidyalay

An international conference titled “International Conference on Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology and Imaging” was held from March 11-13, 2011 in Bangladesh on the role of medical physics in diagnosis and treatment of cancer disease in Gono Bishwabidyalay, Savar.

About 200 experts on cancer from 11 countries (Bangladesh, China, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan) participated in this conference. Around 35 renowned foreign specialists attended and presented their research paper in the conference even though medical physics subject is very new subject in Bangladesh. A total of 94 research papers were presented at the conference. In the programme the importance, role, present position of medical physicist in Bangladesh and current researches in cancer was discussed elaborately.

The organiser of the conference swas Gono Bishwabidyalay. The members who attended the programme were Vice Chancellor of Gono Bishwabidyalay and patron of conference Professor Mesbahuddin Ahmad, the pioneer of medical physics in Bangladesh and chairperson of the conference Professor Golam Abu Zakaria, President of BMPS and secretary of conference Dr. Hasin Anupama Azhari.

At the closing day of the conference many foreign participants expressed their intentions to extend their hand in medical physics education, training and research for the development of qualified medical physicist.


Certificate Awarding Ceremony at East West University

The certificate awarding ceremony for the participants of the Training Workshop on Research Design and Methods was held on April 11, 2011 at the auditorium of East West University.

Professor Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, Adviser for Health and Family Welfare, and Social Welfare Affair to the prime minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh graced the occasion as the chief guest while Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, President, Board of Trustees of EWU was present as the special guest in the ceremony.

Professor Dr. Syed Modasser Ali in his speech stressed on the need of research in higher education and development of community.

The five day-long workshop was facilitated by East West University Center for Research and Training (EUWCRT) in order to train young researchers, scholars and faculty members of the universities and non government organisations who intend to pursue research in the areas of population health, development, marketing, and rural economy. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, member, Board of Trustees of EWU, Professor A.H.G. Quddus, Professor Muhammad Sirajul Haque, Professor Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, Dr. Bijoy P. Barua, and Golam Hossan. The certificate awarding ceremony was chaired by Professor Mohammed Sharif, Vice-Chancellor, East West University and Dr. Bijoy P. Barua, Executive Director of EWU CRT was also present at the programme.


Educational Study Tour

The Department of Public Health, Northern University Bangladesh, arranged two educational study tours. Around 29 students of the Department (Masters Programme) participated in the study tours under the supervision of Dr. Zia Mamoon, Assistant Professor and Head of Department and Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Alif, Lecturer and Course Instructor for Practicum course.

The trip was arranged at National Influenza Center (NIC), Mohakhali on April 7, 2011. The main focus of this study tour was to gather information on diseases, like NIPA, Bird Flue etc.

On April 9, 2011 the Department of Public Health arranged another educational study tour at Dhamrai, Savar to assess the knowledge of women on contraceptives and its use. The main purpose of this trip was to collect data on given topics as well as to learn the communication skills while dealing with community people.

A seminar on “Apprehension of Earth Quake: Bangladesh” was organised by Department of Real Estate of Daffodil International University and Dhaka Sub Editors Council (DSEC) at Daffodil International University (DIU) at the DIU Auditorium on April 10, 2011.

The Minister for Food and Disaster Management, Dr. Mohammad Abdur Razzaque was present as the chief guest at the programme. In addition, Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees of Daffodil International University was present as the special guest.

Mukul Talukder, President, Dhaka Sub Editors Council, Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice Chancellor, Daffodil International University and Masud Ibne Rahman, Head, Department of Real Estate of Daffodil International University were present at the seminar
