Scholarship Awards for deserving students

Ameerah Haq, Undersecretary General of the United Nations and Secretary General Special Representative to Timor-Leste called on University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) Vice Chancellor Professor Rafiqul Islam on April 11, 2011 at ULAB. Haq set up a scholarship in the name of her father, A.R.M. Inamul Haq. She met the newest recipient of the scholarship, Saad Hammadi of Media Studies and Journalism Department.

The scholarship covers full tuition fee for the duration of the student's tenure at ULAB. It also provides a small stipend for the student. Recipients must have an excellent CGPA and show discipline throughout their academic years. Hammadi has a CGPA of 3.94 and was editor of the campus newspaper, the ULABian.


Cricket Tournament at MBSTU

Students of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) organised a cricket tournament on April 19, 2011. This tournament was an inter batch cricket tournament where students from different batches of Criminology and Police Science (CPS) took part. In addition, students enrolled under the Masters of Science programme in the CPS department were also a part of the match. After a tough competition, Death Whisper (students of third year) won the tournament. The sponsor of the winning team was Assistant Professor of CPS department, Nurjahan Khatun, while the sponsor for renovation team (formed by MSc students) was Proctor of MBSTU, Md. Omar Faruk. Vice Chancellor of MBSTU, Prof. Dr. M. Nurul Islam was the chief guest and pro Vice Chancellor, Md. Monirjjaman, was the special guest at the programme.


Celebrations at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet celebrated Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla calendar, on April 14 amid traditional fanfare and festivity, pledging to uphold the nation's heritage.

The biggest venue of the celebration was set at the 'Mukktta Mancha', where programmes started with a 'Sammilita Sanskritik Jote' performing of Rabindranath Tagore's song "Esho he Baishakh…”

SUST Vice-chancellor, Dr. Saleh Uddin was also present at the occasion.

Throughout the day, students enjoyed roaming around the campus. Some even enjoyed the traditional panta bhat (watered rice) with fried hilsa.


Math Olympiad in Academia

A Math Olympiad for the students of English Medium Schools in Dhaka was organized by Academia. Students from class III to class XII in Academia participated. A lot of enthusiasm was noticed among the participants. Prizes and certificate for excellence in performance were given away by Professor Yousuf Ali Mollah, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dhaka University, and Professor Abdus Sattar, President, Society of Bangladesh.

Daffodil Institute of Information Technology (DIIT) celebrated Bengali New Year 1418 and Boishakhi Utshab with great enthusiasm. The day long programme began with a colourful rally and included a number of traditional games like kanamachi. In addition, the Baishakhi Utshab organised folk music, dance, exhibition of traditional products, clothes, food and poetry recitation.

the programme. Students were dressed in all the vibrant colours to celebrate the Bangla New year. Deputy Director Khaled Sohel, Rathindra Nath Das, teachers, high officials and a large number of students of DIIT attended the programme.


Seminar at Bangladesh University

A seminar on “Quality in Higher Education in Bangladesh” was held at Bangladesh University (BU) on April 21, 2011. The Vice Chancellor in-charge, Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Ali Fakir was the chief guest while Prof. Mustafa Kamal Uddin , Head, Department of English chaired the session.

The keynote speakers were Prof. Mustafa Kamal Uddin, Head, Department of English and Architect Sardar Masud Karim, Head, Department of Architecture. Speakers stressed on the necessity of regular assessment of performance of teachers and students, and accreditation of programmes offered by the universities.

Dr. Rowshon Kamal, Head, Department of Business Administration, Prof. Dr. Md. Imamuddin, Head, Department of EEE, Head, Department of Pharmacy Dr. Kohinur Begum, Sadiq Iqbal, Head, Department of CSE, Dr. Mir Mozibor Rahman, Head, Department of Economics, Dr. Enamul Aziz, Head, Department of Sociology, Registrar Lt Col (Retd) Md Abul Kashem, Controller of examinations at BU Lt. Col. (Retd) Mahmud Ul Alam were present at the seminar.
