Introducing: Renewable Energy!

BRAC University, in partnership with BATTCO Bangladesh, organised a successful workshop on “Biomedical Instrumentation and Renewable Energy” on May 23, 2011. The workshop included the presence of Mr Giorgio Guglielmino, Ambassador, Embassy of Italy, Dhaka, as the chief guest; and Professor Ainun Nishat, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University as the special guest. Professor Khondkar Siddique-e-Rabbani, Chairperson of Department of Biomedical Physics and Technology, Dhaka University; Professor Subrata Kumar Aditya from Dhaka University; and Engineer Enrico Selva Bonino, Export area manager from DeLorenzo group were other distinguished speakers present at the event.

The workshop was organised by the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) Department of BRAC University. Divided into three sessions, the first one kicked off with a welcome note by Dr Sayeed Salam, Chairperson of the Department of EEE, BRAC University; followed by an inauguration speech by Professor Ainun Nishat. The Ambassador of Italy in Dhaka, Mr. Guglielmino addressed the audience and shared his views about Bangladesh being a rapidly developing country. He welcomed students to visit Italy not only for its culture but for other important aspects as well.

After the inauguration, Professor Khondkar Siddique-e-Rabbani presented a powerpoint presentation on the various aspects of Biomedical Instrumentations, naming a few instruments and signifying their functions and importance. Another presentation was included in this session by Mr. Enrico Selva Bonino who represented his company, DeLorenzo group, based in Italy. He spoke about his company and encouraged faculty members of universities in Bangladesh to make it a point that students are always equipped with high quality laboratory apparatus. He also suggested providing training support to teaching staffs for a better and more well-informed generation.

After the 'Biomedical Instrumentation' session was over, the 'Renewable Energy' session started with words from Professor Subrata Kumar Aditya. He talked about various renewable energies that are in use, and presented a lecture on PV system and Hybrid Energy System. Another brief presentation was then presented by Mr Enrico who spoke some more about products and services his company has to offer.

At the end of the second session, a speech was given by Dr AKM Azad from the Department of EEE of BRAC University, who was also the chief organiser of the entire workshop. This was followed by a poster presentation on some of the thesis work prepared by BRAC University students on “Biomedical Instrumentation and Renewable Energy.” The poster presentation was sponsored by IEEE Bangladesh, BRAC University Student Branch.

The presentation session included a 'Design and Implementation of Automatic Controller for an Uninterruptible Solar Hot Water System,' 'Design and Development of Microcontroller based ECG Simulator,' 'Output Power Improvement of PV Cell using Automatic Sun Tracking System,' 'Development of an audio evoked response system to facilitate anaesthesia monitoring,' 'Performance analysis of BRAC Solar Home Systems (SHS) in Bangladesh,' 'Acquisition and Monitoring of Multichannel ECG,' and lastly, 'Anaesthesia Monitoring Device Development.' The last session and presentation ended the workshop on a delightful note and the distinguished guests appreciated the work and effort put in by the students of BRAC university. All in all, the event turned out to be quite a success.
