International Seminar at East West University

A two-day long international seminar on “Innovative Approaches in English Language Teaching” was organised at East West University, Dhaka from July 22-23. It was jointly organised by the Department of English, East West University, Teachers Helping Teachers (THT) - a Japan based teachers' forum, and Bangladesh English Language Teachers Association (BELTA).

The seminar was initiated by BELTA and the facilitators were the ELT experts and specialists in English language teaching and teacher education like Dr Steve Cornwell of Osaka Jogkauin College, Anne McLellan Howard of Miyazaki International College, Dr Helen Emery of the University of Essex, Michael Stout of Toyo Gakuen University and Professor Steve Wolfe of Ryukoku University. This six member THT team was led by Dr Patrick Dougherty from Higher Colleges of Technology, UAE.

Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, President, Board of Trustees of East West University also spoke on the day of inauguration with an emphasis on the need of learning English in Bangladesh.

Shafiqur Rahman, Chairperson, Department of English, EWU, Dr Rubina Khan, President, BELTA, Dr Shahriar Haque, Associate Professor, Department of English, EWU and Convenor of this event, were present and spoke on this auspicious occasion.


Youth communicates

IBA-JU Model UN and Communication Club (COMMUNIC), organised a dialogue session “Youth Communicates: West meets east” on July 17, 2011 at IBA-JU seminar library. Four students naming Cliffton, Shane, Jordan, Maddy from Oklahoma State University and Keity from Oklahoma City University of USA met students of Institute of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University to share their ideas and exchange cultural views. IBA-JU director Dr Baktiar Rana opened the dialogue session through his welcoming speech for the guests. IBA-JU faculty Dr Shuddhasattwa Rafiq and Dr Rafiul Huque was also present in the session. During the dialogue, COMMUNIC President Shuvashish Roy described the goals and objectives of COMMUNIC and conveyed the necessity of global exchange programme in his presentation.

 


Reaching Greater Heights

An internship certificate distribution programme was held on July 24 at Bangladesh Agricultural University. Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has made significant advancement in using technology in different aspects of agricultural development, especially in Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Livestock, said Secretary of Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Uzzal Bikash Dutta.

Dean of Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Professor Dr Md Abdus Samad Khan presided the occasion. Vice-Chancellor of BAU Professor, Dr M A Sattar Mandal and Professor Dr S M Bulbul of University Grants Commission were present as special guests.

Professor Dr Sachcidananda Das Chowdhury, Sectary General of Association of Animal Husbandry, Abu Sayed Md Kamal, Dr Raihan Habib, Avijit Saha Apu, Momata Rani Devi, Jubaida Shovana Khanam also spoke at the occasion.

Later, Uzzal Bikash Dutta distributed certificates among the 48 students participating in the training programme.


Workshop in IUB

Promising cinematographer and architect, Rashed Zaman served as the principal resource person in a two-day workshop titled 'Cinematography for the beginners' hosted by IUB film club at the permanent campus of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on July 16-17, 2011.

At the inaugural ceremony, Rashed Zaman showcased kaleidoscopic camera techniques and film art, and presented details on shooting, lighting and application of proper colour. He brought ARRI digital cinematic camera and other peripherals to share basic cine-camera skills and hands-on-training with the members of IUB film club.

The workshop was attended by Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS), Professor Dr Nazrul Islam, Head of the Department of Media and Communication, Dr GM Shahidul Alam, Chief of Bangladesh Television's (BTV) Camera Wing Hemayet Uddin Ahmed, Associate Professor of Film Studies, Dr Zakir Hossain Raju, Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication Mohammad Masud Chowdhury, Lecturer in Media and Communication Humaira Bilkis and Junior Lecturer and faculty Advisor of IUB film club, Jessica Tartila Suma and cinematography enthusiast students from different schools and department of IUB.


International Physics Olympiad

Bangladesh has archived the Best Newcomer Award in the International Physics Olympiad held in Thailand from 11 to 17 July 2011.

This year, in the 42nd event of IPhO, Bangladesh has participated for the first time with a team of 5 students. Abanti Basak has received the 'Best Newcomer Award' for Bangladesh. The students have been selected through the 1st Oxford-The Daily star National Physics Olympiad, organised by Oxford International School. All 5 students have attended 2 months of training course after being selected to represent Bangladesh in International Physics Olympiad in Thailand.

In total, 86 countries participated in 42nd IPhO at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. On 11 July 2011, Her Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn inaugurated the opening ceremony of the 42nd IPhO at the CU Auditorium of the Chulalongkorn University.

The participants were given three theoretical problems and two experimental problems to solve in the competition. Physicists from all over the world gathered in Thailand to judge the performances of the participants.

Professor Dr Kaykobad of BUET offered his heartfelt congratulations to Oxford International School for creating an opportunity for Bangladeshi students to participate in the International Physics Olympiad. Md Shakawat Hossain, President of Oxford International School, also congratulated the participants for their global success.
