Microsoft Imagine Cup 2012 Worldwide Final

Out of 300+ technological projects, “Annapurna” is an agro-based GIS software has become champion at the national level and got the unique opportunity to represent Bangladesh in the prestigious Microsoft Imagine Cup Technology Competition 2012 organised by Microsoft which will be held in Sydney, Australia from July 6, 2012. More than 100 teams from different countries will participate in the event. Bangladesh will be represented by the Team "Engine". This is a team of five members; most of them are from the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB).

In order to introduce Team “Engine” to the press, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) organised a press conference on July 3, 2012 in the AIUB Auditorium.

Representative of Microsoft Bangladesh, Head of Enterprise Sales Mohammed Asif, Chief Commercial Officer of GPIT Rony Riad Rashid, the Managing Director of TSS (Telephone Shilpa Sangstha Ltd) Dr Md Abu Sayed Khan and the Vice Chancellor Dr Carmen Z Lamagna delivered their valuable speech at the press conference.


Expansion of physical structure

Faculties, students and employees of International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) experienced a special day on Tuesday carrying out number of fascinating programmes at the campus.

Professor Dr M Alimullah Miyan, Vice Chancellor inaugurated the 3rd Floor of IUBAT Main Building in the morning in presence of faculties, students, employees including engineering personnel, attended on the occasion. Speaking briefly he hoped the new floor will open more facilities for expansion of academic opportunity for ever increasing number of students from all corners of the country being admitted in different colleges and departments of IUBAT.


Half Yearly Coordination meeting of ASA

The half yearly coordination meeting of ASA was held in the ASA Tower conference hall at Shyamoli, Dhaka on June 30, 2012. President of ASA, Md Shafiqual Haque Choudhury presided over the meeting. The central officials and all district Managers were present at the meeting. In the meeting, discussion was held focusing on the present work-status from January to June 2012 and guidelines on future work-plan.

Matters relating to social welfare programmes were also discussed in addition to the progress of microcredit programmes.


Country's largest Social Business gathering

The country's largest Social Business gathering was held at North South university campus on June 29, 2012. It was a unique opportunity to interact with illustrious personalities including NASA Astronaut Ronald J Garan and Hans Reitz of Grameen Creative Lab Germany and Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Mohammad Yunus, Bangladesh.

The day long forum in collaboration with Yunus Center Bangladesh and Grameen Creative Labs (GCL), Germany started at 9:30 am. In the inauguration ceremony, Nobel Laureate Professor Mohammad Yunus delivered keynote paper of the forum. M A Hashem, Chairman, Board of Trustees, NSU Trust and Dr Abdul Hannan Chowdhury , Professor and Dean, School of Business delivered speeches welcoming the guests. Professor Hafiz GA Siddiqi, Vice Chancellor, North South University was present as session chair.


Budget Analysis by Dhaka School of Economics

The budget (Fiscal Year 2012-2013) of the country has been analysed in a seminar organised by Dhaka School of Economics on June 24, 2012 in its auditorium. This seminar is an extension of post graduate students' effort to analyse the proposed Budget for the Fiscal Year 2012-13. As an earnest learner of economics and its practical implications, students have developed their analysis on the budget under academic guidance of DScE faculty.

Emphasis from the seminar includes increase of the strength on sectors like human resource, health, agriculture (like crop insurance), sustainable and renewable energy and climate change adaptation amongst others.


Debate Festival at Rajshahi

In remembrance of Professor Mojjafar Ahmed, National Debate Federation (NDFBD) Rajshahi division organised 1st NDF BD Rajshahi Divisional debate festival and workshop, 2012. The sponsor was Bangladesh Islamic University and Banglalion WiMAX. The festival was held on June 19 in Bogura Zilla School's auditorium. Their slogan was "Jukttir Jorr noy Jorrer Juktti Chai"

The chief guest of the opening ceremony was Mr Sarwer Mahmood, DC of Bogura Zilla. Special guest was Sayed-ud-Jamman, Principal of Sayed Ahmed University College and Muhammad Ramjan Ali, Headmaster of Bogura Zilla School. Chairman of NDF BD A K M Shoaib was the Chairperson of the opening ceremony.


Education Minister inaugurates Nazrul-Abbasuddin Research Centre

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, MP formally inaugurated the Kazi Nazrul Islam and Abbasuddin Ahmed Research and Study Centre at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on June 26, 2012. The Minister also inaugurated a photography exhibition arranged by the newly established centre at the Multipurpose Hall of the university. A total of 125 photographs depicting the lives of rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and singer Abbasuddin Ahmed are being displayed. The centre also honoured Professor Rafiqul Islam, Uma Kazi, and renowned singer Ferdousi Rahman on the occasion.

Mostofa Zaman Abbasi, senior research fellow and the convener of the centre described the reasons for working behind establishing such a centre at IUB. Towhid Samad, Chairman, Board of Trustees, IUB and Professor M Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, IUB also spoke on the occasion. Associate Professor Akimun Rahman of IUB gave vote of thanks. IUB students rendered Nazrul sangeet and two renowned songs sung by Abbasuddin Ahmed to celebrate the occasion.


First Bio Fair 2012 at North South University

The Life Sciences Club of North South University organised 'Bio-Fair 2012' for the first time on July 4, 2012. It was a national-level science fair at the North South University premises for students of school, college and university levels. The theme of the science fair was the life sciences.

The inauguration ceremony of the day long programme was held at 10pm and the Vice Chancellor Dr Hafiz GA Siddiqi formally inaugurated the programme by cutting ribbon.

The closing ceremony was held at the Plaza area and Mr M A Hashem, Chairman, BOT was the chief guest. Professor Dr Md Abdus Sattar, Treasure of NSU attended as special guest. The Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Dr M Anwar Hossain was present as the guest of honour. Professor J M A Hannan, Chairman of Pharmacy Department, Dr Md Abdul Khaleque, Chairman, Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry and Professor Dr GU Ahsan, Chairman, Department of Public Health delivered speeches. Professor Dr Donald James Gomes, Dean, School of Life sciences presided over the programme. Vote of thanks was given by Dr Jinath Sultana, faculty advisor of LS Club.

Students from different schools participated. Three categories of participants from school, college and university-level were awarded according to the appeal, prospect and originality of their projects.


Opening Ceremony of the Theatre and Movie Screening Club

The Department of English, Northern University Bangladesh opened the Theatre and Movie Screening Club on July 5, 2012 at the City Campus. Professor Dr Sadruddin Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities inaugurated the club as chief guest. 'My Fair Lady' was screened on that occasion. The chief guest appreciated the teacher and student of the Department of English to take this kind of step.
