Saluting the Indomitable Spirits

Thanks to Sumaiya Ahsan Bushra for her wonderful Spotlight titled 'Like a Diamond in the Sky' published in last week's Star Campus. The story narrates the tales of young individuals who, despite a lot of challenges, scored a perfect GPA in SSC and HSC examinations. I appreciate BRAC bank and the Prothom Alo Trust for supporting these indomitable spirits with scholarships. Such an opportunity will encourage other students from the underprivileged strata of the society to excel in their academic life. Everybody in the society should honour the efforts of these young individuals who have successfully managed to brave sheer poverty and represent themselves to be the ideal citizens of Bangladesh.

To Eat and Live Fresh

The economy of Bangladesh is primarily based on agriculture. The hard work of our farmers all through the year has helped Bangladesh to achieve food autarchy despite the country's large population. However, the recent trend of mindlessly using huge amount of chemical fertilisers to produce crops has proved detrimental for both the human body and the environment. Farmers indiscriminately use chemical fertilisers to get a quick produce which in turn makes the crops highly toxic. I believe, the students of agriculture science have a responsibility for sensitising the farmers about the harmful impacts of chemical fertilisers. Students should organise seminars in villages to gather maximum number of farmers. Farmers can learn the appropriate process for growing organic food items from these seminars. In this way, the students can play a big role to help people eat and live fresh.

Finding Unity Among Diversity

After reading an article titled 'Religion and Other Stories' by Saad Adnan Khan, published in last week's Star Campus, I came to realise a lot about our country as a whole. We consider us as Bangladeshis by birth, but don't we feel some sort of an identity crisis at the same time? What does the vandalising of hundred year old Buddhist monasteries in Ramu tell about our unity as a nation? I believe, we are not going in the right direction. I am a proper Muslim, and I firmly believe that Islam never supports such brutality against the adherents of another religion. If we are to grow as a unified nation, we must try our best to find unity despite our diversities.

Life in a Gridlock

Traffic jam has become a serious problem for students who live in Dhaka. Due to two to three hour long logjam on roads, students nowadays have to wake up really early in the morning to make it to their respective educational institutions on time. Students again face problems on their way back home since, the gridlock just becomes outrageous in the afternoon. As a result, traffic jam eats up most of the valuable time of a student's everyday life. Though the problem has already been discussed in the media several times, we haven't seen any effective steps from the government to improve the condition. I hope the authorities concerned would consider the issue with utmost importance, so that people can move freely and do not have to lose precious work hours by being stuck in traffic jam.
