Timely Cover Story

I would like to thank Shamim Ahsan for his well-written cover story in the October 10 issue of SWM. After reading his article it seems that it is the most important issue facing the nation now. If India implements this river-linking project, Bangladesh will turn into a desert. This project seems to be a clear violation of international rules too. We all should be united to resist this Indian evil design, as there is no chance of a second thought here.

Banglapedia in Public Library & DU Central Library

The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh published the Banglapedia about a year ago and it is the first such initiative in South Asia. It has a huge demand, but not all can buy it, given the whooping price it costs. I searched for it in the Public Library and DU Central Library but failed to find it. These two libraries are the biggest libraries in the country. Regrettably neither of the two libraries has yet collected the Banglapedia. Not even after a tempting 50% concession offered by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. When I asked about the Banglapedia at the information section, they replied, “Is it the Bangla Academy Dictionary you are talking about?” I believe the Public Library and Dhaka University (DU) Central Library should immediately collect it so that many of us, who cannot afford it, take necessary action soon.

British Council in Rajshahi

Rajshahi is called the city of education. Many educational institutes like RU,RUET,RMC, RUC and so on are available here. But it is a matter of great regret that there is no British Council in this city. We who are studying in various institutes of Rajshahi city, are deprived of the British Council's facilities. For participating in an internationally approved examination like IELTS and TOEFL, we have to go to Dhaka. For this reason, we are missing various opportunities. I request and notice to the higher authority of British Council to set up a branch up in Rajshahi city considering the greater interest of our people.

Guarding the Reading Habit

I read with great interest the article titled 'Guarding the Reading habit' written by Rezwan Haque. I wholeheartedly agree with him on his thoughts. Reading must be encouraged. When I was in school my teachers strongly motivated all the students to read books as much as possible. Unfortunately these days students are given so much homework that they just do not have the time to pursue this truly pleasurable activity. There is also the fact that other entertainment modes like computer games and text messages via mobile phone have become more popular than reading. As an LLB student I also have to work, I do spend time browsing on the net and I also spend a lot of time with my friends but I do keep a certain time aside for reading. People of all ages of course, have work to do and work is stressful. But i would advise everyone to spend a little time, maybe before going to sleep, to read a few pages of a good book. It also happens to guarantee a sound and comfortable sleep!

Arafat Hasan, LLB Student
