River's Wrath

The erosion of the river Padma has always left in its wake die-hard survivors who after losing everything from their homes to cultivable land struggle to eke out a meager existence in the cruelest of situations. In their desperate attempt to tame the river, they cook meals to offer them to an imagined deity of the river in the hope that it will be assuaged and the process of erosion will end. The Daily Star's photographer Syed Zakir Hossain recently visited the villages in Manikganj that have been in danger of being wiped out as the Padma continues to rage on. He captured the glimpses of the river's transgression on the fertile bank as well as the people who cannot afford to give up on life.
