Changing Asia

On June 1st, 2006, at The Great Hall of the People in Beijing, prizes for a Press Photo Contest titled 'Changing Asia' were given. The contest was a joint endeavour of Asia News Network, an alliance of 14 leading Asian Newspapers and China Daily. Around 20,000 entries from all over the world (printed between June 2005 and April 2006), were collected for eight categories. From them eight solo and series photographs won gold medals. Bangladeshi photographers won two of the gold medals. G M B Akash, a photographer of New Age won the gold for his photograph 'Back-Breaking Work' (5) depicting Pakistani workers at a ship-breaking yard. Abir Abdullah's 'Bomb Blast Survivor' (2) also won a gold medal. The other prize-winning pictures were: 'Rescued' (1) by Qian Cheng from China Daily in the Spot News category; 'Red Nation' (3) by Guo Jianshe also from China, in the Arts and Entertainment News category; 'Great Fall' (7) by Munehiro Okumura from The Daily Yomiuri, Japan, in the Sports category; 'Fume and Frolic' (6) by Wanchai Kraisornkhajit from The Nation, Thailand in the Nature and Environment News category; 'Telly-Watching' (8) by Nguyen Viet Thanh from Viet Nam News from the Daily Life category and 'Rescue Act' (4) by Remar Zamora from the Philippine Daily Inquirer in the General News category.
