On May 7, 1971, Matiur tried to pilot a plane from Karachi to India in an attempt to join Bangladesh's liberation war. Matiur's co-pilot Minhas thwarted the attempt; the JI actively opposed Bangladesh's independence by forming several paramilitia group that had perpetrated rape and genocide on innocent Bangladeshis.
