By Adnan M. S. Fakir

With hundreds of eyes peeping out of windows and starring with amazing curiosity, I must admit, it was pretty wired. It was weirder because those eyes were varied in color from green to red to purple and none of them belonged to any Bangladeshis; but in fact, belonged to people all around world and ironically, mostly Americans, who are absolutely ignorant of cricket and tucked into their own world of rugby, or as they call it, American football. It was the day (here) when Bangladesh had won against India. After hours of literally 'friendly' quarrelling with the fellow Indians over the match, we finally decided to run around the entire campus with the Bangladesh flag flying high over our heads and playing Cryptic Fate's “Cholo Bangladesh” with vitality and ferocity.

From time to time I got calls from some of my friends and relatives about the state of Bangladesh at that time, about how everyone simply went ballistic in the roads. Not amazingly, I got messages from my 6 year old cousin, my 19 year old friends and also my 47 year old uncles. As we run around the campus, shouting our victory, many joined our rampage, and probably many did not even know why we were celebrating. Few of the more 'worldly aware' people asked us why we were celebrating just a victory in a cricket match, when our entire country was still under the State of Emergency. At that time, I thought to myself that the value of 'a sport' was certainly underestimated by many. Clearly, cricket is not just a sport as many may put it. In many ways it not only unifies us, but also bonds our spirit and brings out our blazing patriotism; and that is the fuel for victory for any country. Soon enough, we are already in the Super Eight. Let the Tigers keep on roaring!
