Debating Society of RUET (DSR)

DSR is the most popular cultural organization of RUET. It goes through totally in a nonpolitical environment since its birth. The former name of DSR was DSBR. It means Debating Society of BIT, Rajshahi. It was formed in 1996 But the concept of its forming was started in 1995.

History of its formation:
During the year 1995 the country was affected by floods . Students of this institute stood beside flood-victims. One of these students was Anowar Rahman Shadhin. Once during the time of distribution of goods to flood-victims at Mohonpur, a place at Rajshahi, he got some energetic, strong students as distributors like him who loved debate by heart. Actually it was the time when the seed of DSBR was planted.

Returning to the former BITR (Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Rajshahi) campus a convener committee of DSBR was formed where Anowar Rahman Shadhin and Golam Saroar Jorge were selected to be convener and joint-convener respectively. Mahmood Joarder Poonam also played a vital role. This convener committee arranged 1st Inter-series Debate Championship-1996 and this arrangement was the first presentation of DSBR as well organizer. For the mentioned attempt DSBR. After finishing this program, first permanent committee of DSBR was formed. According to the history the first president and general secretary of DSBR were Anowar Rahman Shadhin and Golam Saroar Jorge respectively. Then DSBR started on a journey to win. They arranged regularly inter-series and inter-department debate contests. In 1999 DSBR organized a Debate Festival and in 2003 they organized Inter-varsity Debate Championship where BITR won the champion trophy. DSBR was not only a platform of Debating but also a storehouse of dream, humanity and reality.

On 1st September 2003 BITR (Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Rajshahi) was turned to RUET (Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology). As a result DSBR was changed to DSR that implies "Debating Society of RUET". Still now DSR continues on the delighted journey of debating. They organize various debate contests. Debaters of this society participate in different national contests. DSR organized 1st Divisional Debate Contest-2005 where RUET achieved champion ship award.

Debate is an art. A debater is an artist. But DSR is the factory of both art and artist. This factory is needed to be more developed. So DRS always expect help from every member of RUET family and all other people of any university and college.
