A week of unlimited fun at NIFD!

Sabrina Hasan Shoily

It was a week full of colourful activities in and around the National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD). The annual photo-shoot, fashion show and Eid exhibition of NIFD were held from 7th to 14th of October. Every year, NIFD organizes an Eid exhibition where clothes designed by their students are offered for sale and before the exhibition a photo-shoot and a fashion show is held with those outfits.

This year, the series of events started with the photo-shoot; with the students themselves being the models. It was great fun for all of us present there….we had to change costumes every five minutes, put on make-up and pose in front of the camera like professional models! On the first day of the photo-shoot, we decided to wrap up at 3 p.m. and then started rehearsing for our fashion show which was supposed to be held on 9th October. The rehearsals proved out to be really amusing because most of us were very tired due to the photo-shoot and weren't being able to do anything properly. Our two, very dedicated choreographers were having a tough time managing the models!

We decided to have seven queues for our fashion show. The first one for sarees, second: boys' panjabi, third: salwar kameez, fourth was a dance number by one of the students, fifth was another round of salwar kameez, sixth was men's and women's funky & casual wear and the last queue was a collection of exclusive sarees and panjabis designed by one of our teachers, Mr. Jahangir Karim.

On the second day, 8th October…we again started with the photo-shoot, this time with more gorgeous clothes designed by our students. At the end of the day, we realized that we haven't rehearsed much and the fashion show was going to be held the very next day! We had to do something to not make it devastating! So, we decided to go early and rehearse a lot the next day before the show. With lots of tension, we headed towards our homes.

The next day, 9th October, was the D-day! From the morning, everyone seemed extremely excited and tensed at the same time. After making all the preparations for the show, we did some final dress rehearsals, we prepared for our iftaar party! There was a grand iftaar which was sponsored by our two very lovable aunties, who are students of NIFD themselves!

After the iftaar, our fellow classmates (the audiences) started arriving along with all the teachers and few family members.

Gradually, the venue was filled with people and we, the models started working on our make-up. Two of our classrooms were turned into green rooms for boys and girls. After some time, the camera and crew of a private television channel, Channel 1, arrived at the venue to cover the show!

Finally at 7:30 p.m. the show started, the first queue, as mentioned earlier consisted of, sarees. Pretty students of NIFD gracefully walked the ramp clad in beautifully created sarees. Next in line were panjabis along with a dance number by Wares, my classmate. Then came heavily ornamented salwar kameez's; where yours truly was…a model (talk about a healthy fatty model!!!) Next, there was a dance performance by Fahima, who danced to the tunes of 'Rock the party' by Bombay Rockers. More salwar kameez's were next in line. Then there was the display of funky and casual wear. This queue was a bit different because there wasn't any fixed catwalk. We came to the ramp and danced casually in pairs! Finally the show ended with an elegant display of sarees and panjabis. The fashion show was followed by a disco party till quite late at night!

10th October basically was a holiday for us, because we needed some rest after three days of hard work. On the 11th, we reached the venue of our exhibition, the W.V.A auditorium at Dhanmondi early in the morning to decorate the place. At 2:30 p.m. our chief guests, Ms. Sadia Islam Mou (model/actress) and beauty expert Ms. Kaniz Almas Khan inaugurated the exhibition. They saw all our creations and praised us for our work. It was very encouraging for us to receive compliments for our hard work from the celebrities. The next three days were spent, with all of us being at the W.V.A all day; we were extremely pleased to greet lots of visitors and customers at the exhibition. Lots of compliments were received and lots of profits were made! All the fun and excitement came to an end with the ending of the exhibition on the 14th October.

The annual Eid exhibition was a huge success. It was pretty memorable for everyone involved with NIFD. I would like to take the opportunity to thank our administration, for all the help and support and to the organizers, who did a great job. Hats off to you guys! We'll be eagerly waiting for next year for some more unlimited fun!!
